External Rear View Mirrors

I am in the process of fixing up my 420G external rear view mirror situation

has RHD mirror teardrop mirror fitted on the wing, about 14" forward

Presumably the required mirrors were fitted by the Dealer in each Country?

The mirror is period correct, but the car looks lop-sided with just one

futhermore there is a long screw that holds it upright…mine was stripped,
so it slumped down, looking stupid, and being ineffective

After many years, I have bit the bullet, got a pair off ebay.
The glass is discoloured and the screws are obviously not correct, but do hold the mirrors

off to the fastener specialist.
I obtained a pair each of SS x 2" BSW and Metric M5

It would appear the metric items hold tight, but the original head is ever so slightly domed (and chrome)…I will place the SS screw in a drill, and ever so slightly bevel the edge

you can see the screws and profile in the pic, if you look closely, far right screw is correct

I was also quoted $65 to replace the glass

That was certainly true in the USA back then, cars had one mirror on the driver’s side only, which would be left in this case. My US delivered 1950 Mark V had one, and my US delivered 1974 XJ12 had one. I agree, they looked lopsided so I added matching right side mirrors on both. Now I like them for backing into my driveway between the house and a fence.

You can buy wing mirror glass at very low prices off e-bay , for vans , just a case of cutting it to size !
Again you can get the right screws , just need to find them !

In my opinion a RH side mirror is a mandatory safety item in the USA given our multi lane roads and traffic conditions. Even if not factory original, I have them on all my cars.

thanks for the useful reply.

unfortunately the German SS dome screws are minimum 10, and dont post to Oz
5 minutes in the drill and I think mine will be good enough to fool anyone except me.
The heads only have a very slight doming

As I try to do as many things as possible to my cars, the glass cutting looks worth trying

I would have used gloves, hopefully he was wearing safety glasses!
