Graham,

I also have a '89 XJ6, but my VIN doesn’t
follow your format, any ideas why different? SAJHY1547KC582551

Hal, Vladan,

The coding list info was attached to the first service invoice from the
local Jaguar Agent after I purchased this car. The full VIN breakdown was
shown (which was what I copied to the list) with the appropriate entries
highlighted to show that all the vehicle numbers corresponded to the
original spec and the details on the V5 (Vehicle Registration Document).

I’d asked for confirmation because we have some strict regulations on
cherished registration (what’s known as “vanity plate” in US ?) transfers
in the UK and if the VIN and engine numbers don’t match when the vehicle is
inspected by the Vehicle Licensing Office for the next transfer, you lose
the plate.

The coding list is headed “Vehicle Identification Numbering System - Model
Year 1989 - 2.9 & 3.6 litre range” and appears to cover all major world
markets. It details that the format is a seventeen digit code of which the
last six are the serial number. Although the VIN number on Hal’s car is
the same format, the breakdown doesn’t match. If Hal’s car is in the same
range as mine, Vladan must be right about the US being coded differently.
You’d think Jaguar had enough to worry about getting over the quality
problems without juggling two code systems as well.

Jaguar Agent should still be able to interpret the code for you though.
