Gold Plated Wheels

This picture is my 1987 XJ-S taken on return trip to Texas via Yuma Arizona from Nevada golfing trip…
Asking if any one else has these wheel. They where on car when I purchased it back in 2004.
These wheels are now stored in garage.

Don’t the center covers have a logo on them?
Hard to tell from the pic but they might be Lister or TWR.
That would be my guess from looking at the body kit.

That looks like the wheels on the US delivered XJR-S, which I believe was about 100 cars. They were an upgrade wheel available from TWR and/or Lister. The gold finish is different than any I’ve seen so not sure about a gold version.

I was gonna say, be careful where you park that car, padner. :open_mouth: :cowboy_hat_face: Glad you have them in storage. :relieved: btw, probably another good reason is that if you ever plan on getting them replated – don’t know if you know about our metal plating laws here in Texas, but basically consumer plating (e.g. car wheels, car trim, etc.) services are not legal here, whether gold, silver, chrome, or whatever. The reason I have heard is supposedly b/c of “environmental concerns”, although I am under the impression we are not very big on that concept here in our state. So, basically, if you want plating/re-plating work done on a part you have to send it to an out-of-state place to have it done. (Greg, is it legal there in VERY environmentally-conscious California? ) btw, Equip - you are the “former” owner of your two XJS coupes? You no longer own an XJS? :open_mouth:

I had to dispose of both my 94 coupes quite a few years ago.
Dropped $15K just trying to keep up repairs on the 6.0 and failing.
When I started to see rust appear I knew I was beaten.
Even after all this time I sorely miss just looking at them.
Now all I have are spare parts I’m trying to sell.

Chrome plating ended in California at the end of last year. Amazingly, this includes industrial hard chroming also. Big changes in this area, which is the first city east of Los Angeles County. I’m all for common sense environmental laws but common sense isn’t so common anymore. I would have been for limits and strong environmental controls instead of hurting business by killing it completely.

The textbook example of what not to do, on just about every level, can be found in CA these days. Very unfortunate, being that so much of our great hobby originated out there.

The lug nut covers do say JAGUAR. It takes a special tool to remove the covers. NOTE these wheels are not hub centric. They require use of tapered lug nuts.
Original owner was a retired Laughlin Nevada casino owner. Odie Lopp’s Nevada Club. I bought the car from his estate representative in Las Vegas back in 2004.

They were a common dealer add-on option offered in a number of finishes and center cap variants. Your car looks to have a full TWR body kit on it - also a dealer option.

My old ‘87 XJ6 had them in chrome / I sent them to the rainbow bridge a few years ago.

The gold plate guys had mobile businesses that would sell their wares to dealers and “plate” badges and whatever else on site. The density of the plating was usually very thin, and you needed to be careful of hard water and any acid based wheel cleaners.

It’s still around today, and in mobile form.
