Jag S Type 1999, wont’t start after replacing Steering Column Lock XR813537. Fault code P1260 Theft detected. Engine does not crank.

The ignition switch is mated to the car. You probably will have to keep some parts of the old switch in place.
Read this.

Thank you Rob. That is not the case with my S type.

I think Rob means that you need the PATS transceiver, which includes the exciter ring, from the old lock. Either that or I think you may have to re-programme your keys. This explanation might be helpful.

Thank you Eric for your explanation and provision of the diagram.
Attached is the pic of the part that has been replaced. Could you confirm if that’s what you are refering to?

Thanks Eric for your swift response. However, that part shown on your last reply has not been changed/replaced in the first place. As a result, the issue should be somewhwere else I believe.

OK, are you sure all the plugs are correctly seated. As you have been working on that area it does suggest that the most likely cause of the P1260 is that for some reason, the key is not now being read correctly. Is the key flap switch operating. As you just start to put the key in, you should year the steering lock release and I think this starts the process of verifying the key?

Eric, all plugs are seated. I checked and re-checked again several times. Also, the key seems correct as once inserted, it unlocks the doors and releases the steering lock. The remote control also works fine. It is strange.
Anyway, will carry on searching for the right answer.

Thanks,

A couple of thoughts: can you clear the P1260 code because I don’t think the car will start while that code is present? My experience of trying clear it is it comes back straight away until you find what has caused it but it be worth trying. Also, have you tried a hard reset ; disconnect the battery and leave it for half an hour?

Eric, I have tried to clear that P1260 code without success. All other codes will clear but this won’t. I’ve called in 2 specialists with different diagnosis tools ( one with Autel diagnosis tool and can’t remember the brand of the second one). Perhaps, could you recommend the best diagnosis tool on the market (for S-Type Jaguar 1999) able to troubleshoot and erase such code.

I use an Autel MD802. Out of interest, did you disconnect the battery when you changed the lock? I’m just wondering if there is actually nothing wrong but the PATS sensed ‘tampering’ when you were working on the lock and now needs to be reset. Something simple like locking & unlocking the car with the button on the key fob might do it. But, I did have a similar problem with my XK8 and I had to use the Jaguar IDS system to reprogramme the keys before it would start.

Thanks Eric. It all started as left the car unsued for about a year and the battery drained. Upon replacing the battery, the steering lock fail to disengage. I subsequently bought the part and replace it. Although the steering lock now disengage, the engine won’t crank… showing the P1260 error- theft detected. Might need a help from the dealer. let’s see.
Also, I believe it is a common problem with Jaguars of that generation. below is a link to a video that might indicate it is the key… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iqPygC_j4BM
