Jump-Starting From the Front

Hi Guys,

I got a call earlier today from the preacher lady that I had sold Scrapper (my '96 X-300) to some time back. She had bought her to have her fixed up to good running and cosmetic shape before driving. Unfortunately, the body guy that was working on her went off to the hooz-gow, and left the trunk locked. The battery has now run down, and she cannot get the boot open, as a result. :astonished:

I know there is some way to trip the latch through using a long-handled screwdriver through the license plate hole(s), but before trying that method, I thought I remember something about a way to jump start using some connecting points inside the engine compartment. Does anyone remember that method?

Ah, I think I found the answer just now in the archives. Here it is, for anyone who didn’t already know:

I have a ‘97 XJ6 and assume it’s the same basic electrical hook-up
as the ‘95 XJ6’s. As previously mentioned on this thread,
using the key should serve to open the trunk, even if the battery
is too weak or dead. But if you did want to open it electrically,
or for that matter to jump start the car from under the hood
(bonnet), ----on the extreme left side of the firewall, and about 4
inches down from the top (from just about where you place your
right hand to lift the hood when opening it on the driver’s side),
if you look straight down you will see an insulated post (actually
a short bolt/stud with a cable and nut on it). It will probably
have a black plastic cap/cover on it, for protection, that you will
have to remove. This is actually a fairly heavy duty ‘’+12volt dc’’
terminal (going directly to the starter, battery, etc) for +12v use
under the hood, and can also be used for jump starting. And for
the other question on this thread Re. opening the trunk with a dead
battery, if external jumper cables were applied to this under-hood
terminal, it would of course provide power to open the trunk for
access to the car’s battery, etc.–

I had also forgotten that the X-300s have a key hole in the rear badge to manually open the boot lid. Oops! :flushed:
