Looking for a few parts

I am trying to rebuild the transmission on my 1950 XK120 and avoid using a non-stock transmission. I have an original Moss box that looks to be in pretty good condition overall and most parts that I need are available except for these:

  1. springs for the syncro balls, XK unlimited says they’re out of production.
  2. the needle bearing assembly for the first motion shaft
3, a 1st gear (I have a JH model Moss box) in good condition. Mine is a bit chewed up
    (but works)
  3. I’ve read the Forum thread on using a shim to prevent excessive syncro movement
resulting in a locked 1st gear. Is there a source for that?

Thank you for your help.

Here is what I did about the stuck in first gear problem.

Needle bearing assy can be scrounged from any defunct Moss box.
Same with synchro springs. I don’t have size specs handy, but bearings and springs can be had from industrial sources. You might have to buy a box of 100 springs.

Thanks. I have a call into Vintage Jag Works to see whether they have some extra parts that’d work for me.

My 1957 XK150 SE FHC started to get locked in first gear from time to time. After much Googling I found that this was such a common problem that Jaguar issued an official workshop mod for it that involved removing the top cover (with the three selector rods) and then removing the rod concerned in order to place a shim (in fact a thin washer) on it to prevent its excessive movement, thus stopping the locking in first gear. I found a simpler way of achieving the same thing. Instead of removing the rod to fit the thin washer, I bought and fitted a circlip of the right dimensions. At first I tried two thin circlips, but it didn’t feel like it was selecting first gear firmly enough, so I removed one circlip, and it’s been perfect ever since. In my Googling I also found an excellent and highly detailed article about how to do the job properly (involving a major gearbox strip down and drilling a hole for a new rivet) but the method I’ve described has worked perfectly for me. YMMV, as they say…

Thank you Tony. I haven’t had a 1st gear lock up yet but I wanted to know how to remedy it and I’ve gotten good input from the forum. I appreciate that. My main problem is popping out of second gear which I think, given that the syncro gears look good, is caused by weakness of the springs (balls), and a flat spot on the plunger.

Your welcome. I can’t help you with any other gearbox issues I’m afraid as thankfully I don’t have any. (Should I have risked saying that I wonder?)
