[Lumps!] 1970 XJ6 finally on the road

I finally have my lumped 1970 XJ6 on the road. I have about
40 miles on it so far. No major problems.

I went with a Edlebrock 600 cfm carb, Gen I 350 block and a
2004R transmission. I used RHS cylinderheads (180cc). The
engine is @ 9.4 to 1 static compression. The Cam is a Comp
Cams XE 262 hyd. flat tappet. I am getting by on 89 octane
gas without any pinging. I think I can get it down to 87
Octane playing with the timing.

I am using the twin Jaguar electric fuel pumps. I installed
a fuel pressure gauge near the carb. I am seeing 3-4 PSI.
I am using the original Jag fuel lines. I thought I had
cleaned the lines out but I was wrong. I am using the stock
Jag fuel filter at the rear. I have installed a 30 micron
fuel filter just before the Carb. I will need a 10 micron
fuel filter based upon the crud that is still getting into
the Carb.

It took me @ two years from ordering the kit from Andrew at
Jaguar Specialties to an on the road XJ6. A disclaimer,
during the same time period I had 1 gall bladder and three
incisional hernia operations which slowed me down a little.

A very enjoyable project so far.–

The XJ6 sat in my garage since 1988 with a bad timing chain.
At some point I pulled the Jag engine and found it was
shot. Two long studs had broken and two cracks between the
cylinders.

The kids grow up and move out. Back on active duty with the
USMC in 2006 (7 months in Iraq). I retired from the USMCR
in June 2008.

The Chevy conversion was started in the Fall of 2008. It
has been nice having some free time.

You need to see 6 psi. 3-4 is to low and it will most likely
stumble badly when you need to get on it.–

Hi, well done on getting your cat up and running.

The tanks are easy to flush on these cars, the drains can be
reached through the hole in the side valance panels. Once you’ve
done that you should flush the lines too.

When I ran a carb I teed the tanks together, installed a single
high-flow 10 micron filter then a carter rotary vane pump like the
following: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CRT-P4070/

The head/cam/carb combo sounds good and should be pretty lively.

Well, first things first. Thanks for the service n the sand pile.
Congrats and more thanks for the years in the Marine corps. And, I
sure am glad you are back safely.

That is a neat car. Nice installation. Is that a regulated fuel
pressure or is it the best the old Jag pumps can do? Old flat heads
would live on the 3 to 4, but s modern V8, as rob says will need
almost twice as much. The flat heads did it because that is about
all the needle and seats in the carbs could handle. Sometimes in
racing, we would go for more PSI, even if they leaked at idle.
Revved up, they would drink it fast enough to overcome any seat
issue. heck rae engines were not built to idle, eh??

Now, that you are at that plateau, has FI entered your mind?

Welcome back ‘‘jarhead’’!!!

Marc

Welcome back…and congrats on the project. Time to start to
enjoy your car…nice looking install. I have had mine for 37
years…it sat while kids ate money…and I took care of my
family.
Four years ago I ‘‘finished’’…

Just came back from a great desert night cruise…driving
what you saved…built and fashioned…

Incredible…enjoy…–
