[Lumps!] Brake Light

My brake light started going on and off today. Plenty of fluid, brakes work
fine and all the wires are in place and meter out fine. What is the
defective part?

Lokks like you have covered the hard stuff and left the easy
stuff.

I suggest you check out the brake light switch. Bridge it and see
if the lights stay on. If so it is likely to have an intermittent
fault.

Next are the bulb contacts. They may be lose in the socket and
work some time and some not. Build up the contacts with solder or
just put ijn new bulbs.

My old IHC Scout was that way.

Last and very probable is whether the bulb sockets are well
grounded. As we know, grounds or earths in Lucas is VERY
mysterious!

One more thing. If you have a John’s car wire set upo. His
changes involve this area of electics, I think.

Has something to do with the back ups coming on as well ?

Good luck

By brake light, do you mean the brake warning light in the instrument panel?
If so, my first guess would be the brake fluid level sensor in the master
cylinder fluid reservoir. Easiest way to verify if this is the cause is to
unplug one of the two wires going to the reservoir cap. Second possible
cause is pressure imbalance between the front and rear brake systems-this
could be caused by air in the lines, a defective PDWA (pressure differential
warning adapter-IIRC) or a bad master cylinder.
