[Lumps!] Fog lights and glove box

Hi Everyone
As it is winter down this end of the world it is time to look through the workshop manual and find out just what features the old girl has.

  1. Fog lights: Ever wondered how to select the fog Light section on the headlight dial? Me too and after reading the workshop manual I still have no idea on how to select this setting. Any ideas (BTW I have tried pushing it in before turning and it still does not want to work). AND do I have to connect any relays up if I ever am able to select this position from the dial or are they already there. I noticed the wiring is in place.

  2. The glove box: Ever wondered what is inside? Me too but I can’t get it open. ( I must admit this in on my new-1974- LWB SII). Any ideas on how I can get the glove box opened when it is locked and none of the keys work?
Fortunately winter is coming to and end…
    Cheers

You didn’t mention but I am assuming you have a Series III XJ6/12. Behind
the headlight knob is a “circlip” on the spindle. Remove this little clip
and the switch can now be depressed and rotated into the “fog” position.

Jaguar did not use any relays in the fog lamp circuit. Be aware, though,
that it is so designed that the headlamps will extinguish if the “foglamp”
position is selected. If you would like the low beams to remain on with the
fog lamps I can provide instructions.

(I think…not 100% sure…that the Series II cars are the same in this
regard.)

I’ll think about your glove box dilemma and report back.

Hi Doug
Thanks for the reply.
Both my vehicles are 1974 builds. Both have the headlight selector with the ‘foglamp’ setting. I will have a look at switch tonight and see how I go. As I indicated I only picked up this ‘feature’ after reading the owners manual. The manual also indicated that if the foglamp position is selected the other lights will not illuminate. Your solution around this would be appreciated.
Cheers
Ian

Thanks Allan
The idea sounds fine but…
On my lumped car when I ‘tested’ the glove just to find out which way to turn the sucker I successfully locked it, then spent the next 10 minute trying to unlock it as it was stuck. I fear on this new car that even if I do have the tumblers depressed that it is something else that is stopping it from opening. I will give your idea a try over the weekend in any case.
Good to see another Aussie involved. Reading the XJ forum the fog lamp question has sparked (pardon the pun) a lot of interest. For those on the ‘right side’ it takes a bit of thinking to convert their suggestions for our cars.
BTW I don’t really know who operates this forum but perhaps Doug’s reply to the fog lamp issue could be placed in the archives for future reference.
Thanks Doug

Pick the lock, Ian. It’s not difficult, but you need the right tools. A
hair pin won’t do it. I haven’t done it for many years, but I ground up an
old hacksaw blade to make a two-part ‘key’ – a bottom bit slides in and
holds a turning torque on the lock, while a one-tooth upper piece presses
the tumblers one at a time as you slide it in or out. The steady turning
pressure holds the pins up once they’re depressed, and with a bit of
patience you’ll get it.

Good luck
