[Lumps!] Fuel injection conversion on SBC S1 XJ 383/200R

Am making good progress with the conversion to the EZ-EFI 2.
2.0 fuel injection. The S3 filler caps, new tanks and high pr
pressure lines are installed. The new Pollak six (6) port ch
changeover valve and it’s relay are in place.

Today I cut the two inch hole to run the wiring for the ECU
and hand held – it is all in place inside the car now. The fi
final place to bolt the ECU is still up in the air… I ne
need to be able to see the front for the LED lights and the wh
whole interior is out as I am going to get a bare metal pa
paint after the conversion is done.

The wiring loom under the hood is in place now and a lot of
it will fit behind the Optima battery. The throttle body,
coolant sensor and fuel pressure regulator is ready (need to bol
to bolt the fuel pressure regulator to the fire wall). The CD box
CD box for the spark is on the way now and should be here this w
this week… a little ordering screw up!

The new distributor is installed at TDC and it will be cont
controlled by the ECU for optimum performance. The heated 02 s
02 sensor is in place and the wires connected.

This afternoon I will run the wires for the fuel pressure se
sensor and inline fuel pump in the trunk. Then all the wi
wiring for the relays for the changeover valve and the rear tr
trunk portion will be done.

Soon after the CD box arrives and I get it installed — I
can start the car! It will be interesting to see how much
better it runs/starts and stops with the modern fuel
injection. I expect more fuel economy with the fuel
injection and 2-4 MPG is not unheard of in these co
conversion.

The tablet that controls the setup and gives real time
information is now ‘‘stuck’’ onto the glove box door!–

Car is now started and runs perfectly. Had a bad fuse to th
the distributor power and then the internal LEDs started wo
working and it was powered.

Will now order the heat shield materials for the fuel lines in the
in the engine compartment area.

Did the Setup questions and it started up the first time
time…FP gauge is flaky and they are sending a replacement.

Will clean it up today and drive it around for about an ho
hour in all types of conditions to let it ‘‘Learn’’ and ad
adjust the settings.

The tablet shows all the desired settings while driving…–

Het shield wrappings arrived today… car is running perf
perfectly.

New FP gauge arrived and was replaced… not able to set FP to
to 43 pounds on the gauge and on the tablet. Have added an
another FP gauge Shraeder valve for redundant testing if ev
ever needed.

Now to fill up the tanks and see over some time what the ch
change is in MPG.

I am happy I did the conversion as it starts and stops
correctly now.–

Nice work.

Picture posting here isn’t all that
hard. I’ve managed it a time or two.
It is the size limitation that is the
usual fail point. too big, no go!!
There are ways to reduce picture size.
I’ve never mastered any of them.

I did find a ‘‘work around’’. I merely
set the resolution at a mid point on
my ancient Olympus. Sans UCB camera.
Result, J-l accepts them.

Trouble is this machine has no ability
to read it’s cards!!! It seems to be missing
a Plug in’’ features. so pic att’s nt always work!

But, another old Dell on XP accepts
a satellite card reader. So, I do pics there.

Is there a ‘‘package shelf’’ in front on your car,
or do I have another Jaguar in mind. that would seem a great place for
great place for an ECU with a display.

Or get dangerous and remote the display…
ECU under the passenger seat.

Or, as I do with my GPS, on the crash roll.
Or is it too big?

Or, in the glove box. Junk from there gets
down sized and the remnant into the cubby.

JOKE: Don’t take it personal. Just that I noted
your ‘‘other car’’, the Dodge 4x4.

Neighbor got a real steal on a nice
late 90’s black Dodge 4x4. Gas,
not diesel. Well, he got the right
wheels in a median between his drive
and mine. Enhance the recent rototill,
I don’t get it. Royally stuck. A good 8’’
deep in gooey black clay courtesy recent
rains. Wheels spun merrily, no bite.
Did not take on to account, the apparently open
differentials. The worst way for most
4x’s to get stuck.

it took a family members Big Toyota
SUV on hard top in wheel to yank t out.

Punch line. Big bad 4x4 gets stuck in
owner’s front yard!!!

My son has big Dodge diesel 4x4.
A real work hose, but slick grass on
an incline can stop it. Got stuck in
their Sierra pasture. it took the neighbor and his winch equ
equipped Jeep to get it back n to
firm footing.

I know how to post photos, but reducing them just for this si
site is too much trouble. Some day they will upgrade to mo
modern stuff…

Yes, there are two under dash shelves in a S1 XJ… I have
the ECU just lying on the RH one… after the paint job I
will attach it securely underneath there some where. The
ECU itself only has flashing lights… the tablet I the
device that has all the live data and the ability to make
changes. It is on a cable that allows it to be attached to
a GPS type stick on mount… currently I have it on the
windshield (sometimes just stuck to the glove box door).–

You and the rest of the world
have mastered a technique of
photo size reduction. I am an
exception !!

My comment was my rather simple
‘‘work around’’. Just take ‘‘smaller’’
pictures!!!

CHP’s are at times ‘‘touchy’’ about
where devices are placed in respect
the windshield. Hence, a really
good spot for my Tomtom just
doesn’t exist in my Jaguar!!

So, I’ve not ‘‘stuck’’ the mount anywhere

And, I do move it from car to car at times.

‘‘Some day will upgrade to the modern stuff’’.
If there is a ‘‘never’’, this is it!!!

Final part of the fuel injection conversion is to add the
custom carbon fiber kit from Bob Loftus. I had a aluminum
radiator support that had all kinds of brackets for the dual
fans and B&M trans cooler… so I had a shop cut off the top
piece and add a new higher one.

I then cut out the proper shape for the Jaguar S3 and cut out
the needed hole for Bob’s K&N filter… all is ready when it
all arrives. I have a Spectre plenum cap, 4’’ tube and connector
to the bellows.

Then the conversion will be totally done… I will resize the
photos and post them to this site when it is finished.–

Looking forward to them. although,
I’ll not make any major fixes
to my Jaguar, these projects
are always of great interest to me.

I remember that alloy bridge you made
in lieu of the tin one that adorns
most cars. Impressive.

Better yet with Bob’s ‘‘funnel’’
Look good, use good filter, and breathe
cool air.

Yeah, this site eill ‘‘modernize’’
well in the words of Adlai …
Can’t fninh or I’ll get bounced!!

So, I figure, I’ll just live with it.
Lots of old stuff around here, a nyway,
starting with me…

Since the conversion I have only about 75 miles on the car.
It has been in the paint shop for two months and is now back
home.

Yes a crate engine ZZ4 383 that I installed in 1997. Runs
much better now and I expect an improvement in MPG.

Your cold air box looks great… photo was just approved!

Roger,
Any update on your fuel mileage?
Merry Christmas,
Bob Loftus

Bob

Not yet… I had my new left hand fuel tank leaking since it was installed… it turns out there was a “extra” hole that caused it to leak fuel onto the ground… it has since been repaired with a Allen cap screw inserted in the hole caused when they tapped the mounting bracket…

Plus, my alternator shorted internally and I am expecting the replacement to arrive tomorrow. Have to replace the charging wire and one other wire that was too close. Was lucky the car did not catch on fire or ruin the paint on the hood… just lots of white smoke and a tow home.

Will start driving it again hopefully next week…

Filled up the Jag today… have a 200 mile freeway ( it is on the 5 freeway but will be a lot of stop and go heading south toward San Diego and back home on a Saturday – supposed to rain so may be surprised) round trip planned for Saturday… will fill up after the trip to get a good idea of the current mileage. I hope for a noticeable improvement… it sure stops and starts better and the AFR is always consistent.

The alternator shorted and took out the charging wire and one wire to the tach… all is repaired now and

the local short test rides have proven all is well again. Was scary seeing all the smoke coming out from under the hood!

Only have the new front door panels to get done now… I put on S3 front door pockets/arm rests and that

leaves with a extra hole…

Happy New Year!

Our rain finally stopped and I filled the RH tank up again today… using GPS miles of 198 and 9.49 gallons

I am getting 20.86 mpg. This was about 10-15% city and the rest “freeway/highway” miles… speeds of

65-74 mph when able…

Jag odometer showed 132 miles so all my past mpg figures are low… I was figuring 15-17 mpg with the carb… but it was probably higher… the difference in mileage is about 1/3… so 15 mpg would be 19.95 mpg

and there would not be much gain… but it starts and shuts off better… AFR at steady speed is comparable to

the highly modified QJ carb of 14.9-15.4. I spend a lot time and money getting that carb done by the

best guy in CA… he changed out many parts multiple times while we were adjusting it.

The new GPS speedo should fit and work well… will R&R the speedo today to confirm the dash wood

holes size… I think it is very close… then will order the one without the turn signals and high beam

light that is a little cheaper… I will put a blue light in the dash for the high beam light and my turn signals

show up in a separate panel above and in the center of the Tach and Speedo. My plan is to put the

little GPS antenna under the plastic speaker cover in the center of the dash pad (there is no speaker there)

and there is plenty of room and it will then not show.

I hate to have to use the GPS on the dash for the correct speed and miles… will get around to getting

the new speedo soon.
