[Lumps!] Ram horn exaust manifolds?

I have a 1977 XJ6 with a chevy 305. It needs exaust. Do I use the
Rams horn exaust manifolds with center dump on the passenger side
and the center dump with a slight bend at the flange for the
drivers side to clear the steering rack or the straight down like
the passenger side? I need to know which to ones to buy before I
get to impatient and just buy a set. Thanks–

Jay, you want them both to go straight down. As I remember Roger
Mabry has or had the ‘angled back’ one on one of his cars and said
it either rubs or sets too close to his steering rack. Know there
are 2 different dia. ram horn manifolds. One is larger for hot rod
engines I guess, don’t know more about them than that. But surely
they’ll be more expensive, uh?–

Jayfire:

The ones on my LT1 are both center dump both sides snd thence to
Sun Coast down pipes that have a bit of a slant to accomodate the
steering tower.

Yes, my SII had the rear facing manifold on the drivers side when I
purchased the already converted car and it hit the steering shaft.
Replaced it with the straight down (center dump) version and the
Sanderson downpipes and it clears fine. The Sanderson down pipes
are not for the Corvette Ram Horns as they are smaller at the
collectors (2 inches I believe).

www.speedwaymotors.com has brand new OER Corvette Ram Horns that
are 2 1/2 inches at the collector for $59.00 each. You can use a
reducer to 2 1/4 inch for the headpipe or use 2 1/2 inch pipe back
to the mufflers. Getting 2 1/2 inch pipe through the IRS is not
possible without enlarging the holes (not recommended).

Be careful about using the correct length bolts! Two sizes are
needed and are not included with the manifolds. The exhaust gaskets
that come with the manifolds are a cheap joke. Get some quality
ones from Fel Pro or another manufacturer.

You need one L and one R. They have the alternator brackets built
in and the heated tube in the colllector (can be easily removed,
the hole in the top threaded and filled with a bolt).

They will fit our Jaguars just fine and can be ported to match
larger heads and painted with High Temp Paint or sent out for
Cermichrome plating.

I am currently porting a set for my LT1 engine and plan to ‘‘cut
off’’ the alternator portions from each side.–
