[Lumps!] Rear Seat interchange?

Will the rear seat from a series III or possible an XJ40 fit my 77
Series II? My rear seat springs are rusted beyond repair plus the
seat material is vinyl and I would like to find black leather.

Thanks

Hi Eric -

Please check on this with someone else, but I believe that a
S3 rear seat is a direct fit. I also think the rear seat
from an XJ40 will fit without modification, but I’ll less
certain on this! Certainly there are members here who have
done these conversions: you may get more luck if you post
the questions in the general XJ6 forum.

Good luck

Eric, I recall seeing some pics here of someone who put the series
III rear seat into the II. I don’t recall him making any comments
about the bottom portion but the back fit. I seem to recall he had
to snip off a short section of ‘frame’ then re-streach the
material. This caused a small wrinkle at the upper-outside corner
of the back. He mentioned it was easily covered by the seatbelt.
Maybe do a search or go back and check past posts.
No idea about the XJ-40 rear seats. I’ve seen pics of a
procedure here on how to put their front seats into a series II.
And I’ll be doing that. good luck–

IFRC, the rear seats will fit, but the seatbelt mechanisms have to
be changed as well.
The Series 3 belt mechanism is on the rear parcel shelf, where the
S2 is on the side of the seat. So the S2 seats have an indentation
in them to allow for the seatbelt mechanism. The S3 seats don’t
have that indentation.

I think the same is true for the XJ40.

David is spot-on regarding the S3 seats. The XJ40 squab
will also fit (with the seatbelt change David indicates) but
the back is a bit wide at top–it can be taken in, though.
The S3 seat back needs no modification.

Both S3 and XJ40 seat squabs are a bit deeper–you lose a
little legroom. Check the XJ archives–this has been gone
over numerous times.–

Another note…

The seats in Black were special order on the Series 3 cars, so they
aren’t that common. It’s a lot easier to find them in black on the
Series 2 cars.

Another option, find good seats in any color, and strip and dye
them. Robert from Leatherique posts on the XJ list, and can help
with that…
