[Lumps!] which 18" chrome wheels for 84 XJ6?

In reply to a message from Daniel Koster sent Sat 11 Aug 2007:

I would suggest going to eBay Motors and searching for ‘‘chrome
corvette wheels.’’ The Corvettes have the same bolt patter as you
Jag, and you might be able to find the correct offset, or adjust
the offset with a set of spacers or something. Anyway, I want to
get the semi-wide 5 spoke wheel when my car is done… not the
super thin spoke. I think it is found on the C6 Corvette models…
I think that’s the 2006 and up.

I would go for either a 16’’ or 17’‘… 17’’ should give you
satisfacory traction with that LS6 and a nice balance between ride
comfort and handling. Anything with more torque might benefit from
a 16’’ wheel. Bigger wheels, well I think it would be too much
wheel and would look akward on the car… that’s coming from a
younger guy, too. I think the 18’'+ would be too much of a gangster
wheel. Every now and then you’ll see an XJ6 on eBay painted bright
green with 19’s… just not my style!

Lots of good ideas on there, just a thought!

I definitely want a larger wheel…but maybe I’ll stick with a 16’’ wheel
instead of 18’'.
Now…what wheel designs look best on the Jag?

Dave,

Thanks for the reply and great suggestions. 16" or 17" seems to be right.
There are dozens of 5 spoke corvette wheels on ebay…many of them the
17x8.5, 18x9.5 combination (front/back). Do you have a picture of your
“semi-wide 5 spoke”? Most of the '06+ wheels I saw were very “airy” in the
spokes (if you know what I mean).

Am I correct in thinking that 8.5 and 9.5 are just way to wide for the Jag?

I’m assuming 8" width all around…245 width…

Sound right?

Dan

No…the 9.5’s will fit. If you look a my photos you’ll see I
installed a 9.5 camaro ss rim on the rear of my xjs. It will work
but you’ll need to run a thin spacer…maybe a 1/4’’ or so. The 9.5
rim actually is more like 9’’. GM has a wide flange on the inside
bead of the rim that accounts for ‘‘most’’ of the .5 in 9.5. In
reality its pretty much a 9’’ rim. I looked long and hard at all of
those rims on ebay and heres why I stayed with my XJR rims. I
didn’t see the need to go and spend ‘‘X’’ amount of money on a rim I
needed to modify to fit. While the bolt pattern is correct (GM and
BMW) the center hole is to small and you would need to modify them
to fit and probably run a spacer to locate the wheel in the
wheelwell correctly. I couldn’t justify modifying a brand new set
of rims…and what if you have a warranty issue with the wheel?
Your toast. You’ve modified the wheel…no one is going to warranty
it now. Thats what ultimately made me decide to stick to the jag
wheels. Let me tell you, IMO, they look great, I’ve got more tire
on the car than anyone that I have read about onlist (that I know
of) and best of all…its completely safe…no spacers used. Just
a thought while your researching, Dan.–

All you people changing wheels from 1988-1992 Jaguars with 35 hole
7X15 wheels - sell me a couple to use as replacements. I need one
BADLY - my LF brake caliper mounting hole broke and it spun into
the inside of the rim creating holes for the air to escape!

It turns out the metal is worth more than reselling the wheels and
the wrecking yards just turn then into Recycle material now.–

FYI- the Corvette wheels (any year) aren’t direct bolt
on for Jags. The pattern may be the same, but they
have a load more offset, not to mention they are
designed for a very shallow hub (our grease cap and
more would poke through the center).

For those, (and I mean 84 and newer) you would need
wheel adaptors to get the right offset…— Daniel Koster lumps@pendentive.biz wrote:

Dan…one more thing I should have put in my above post. The 9.5’s
will work, with a spacer (don’t like!) in the REAR only. You would
have to go with a narrower rim up front and as Andrew said, the
dust cap becomes an issue. I would not run any larger than an 8 up
front and the offset is VERY critical on the front rims.–

Dan,

If you look around on eBay you will see that most of the Corvette
wheels out there are reproductions. This is good and bad. It’s
good because the Corvette style wheels are made to fit other cars
with the same bolt patters… there are some out there compatible
with Camaros, trucks, etc. This means that you will be able to
shop around and find some different offsets, heights and rim
widths. Reproduction wheels are bad because quality may suffer. I
would check to make sure the manufacturer makes quality rims and
has a good plating process.

True, the chrome wheels are not a direct bolt on, however 5 minutes
or less with a nice sized die grinder will take that pesky lip off
the inside of the wheel. I have done it myself on a Camaro wheel
and it’s really not hard. Will it void the warranty? I’d check
with the manufacturer.

Consider this: offset is measured from the inside of the wheel. As
you make the wheel more narrow, offset matters less because the
outer (and inner) edge of the wheel move closer to the center of
the wheel. Maybe moving from a 9.5’’ down to an 8.5’’ width would
help? That would push the outer wheel face half an ince away from
the fender… which is about 25mm. I am almost positive somebody
put Corvette wheels on their car and they looked great!

Also, here’s the ebay number for the wheels I like: 290147551807

Yes…I believe it was a burgundy one. Look on the photo archives
there is probably picks BUT he had to run specers to do it. I’ve
seen alot of carnage from failed spacers or broken wheel studs due
to the use of spacers.–

Rob,

The tires on the blue Jag look great!

Those are the 17x8.5 and 18x9.5 corvette wheels?

What tires? (size/brand)

Dan…if you go to the jags photo albums under lumps w/ pictures
you’ll see that car. There is another entry right next to it or
close to it on the same page showing the rim install (with spacers
required pffft!) and also on the same page you’ll see a camaro ss
9.5 wheel on the back of my xjs. I don’t recognise these rims as
being corvette rims but they might be. The guy that had that xj
sold it a few months back but you may be able to PM him. He was
pretty active on the forum.–
