[Lumps!] XJS Auto Transmission Cable Issues

I have dropped in my engine and transmission in my 1986 XJS. I have
run into an obstacle on the transmission shift cable. I am using
the Suncoast kit. My transmission is the 700r4. I have the gear
selector in Reverse. And I have verified the gear selector arm is
in Reverse on the transmission.

I have talked to Jim from Suncoast about my situation. He seemed to
recall that the XJS shifter cable had a clamp and a big loop under
the console. He suggested that I loosen the clamp, take up the
slack in the loop and then mount the cable to his bracket. I did
not find a clamp and I reduced the loop as much as I possibly
could. I still am a half an inch short of getting to the Jag Cable
Abutment to the Suncoast bracket. And I am about of an inch short
on the cable end to gear shift lever on the transmission.

I also considered the Jags That Run approach of splicing in a
inch rod with a compression fitting on the Jag shifter cable end
and the spliced end. There is not enough room to squeeze in this
set up.

I am now considering some sort of after market cable and brackets
to overcome this latest obstacle. I am looking to the group for any
thoughts on this issue.

I know I asking for help but I am also asking a favor of the group
if you are considering replying to my issue STAY ON TOPIC. The
last time I asked for help from the group was about drive shafts
(thanks to all that replied, I got my drive shaft built and it
fits!!). That thread ended with a discussion between two guys on
fender emblems being glued on backwards. The archives are already
full enough. Dont need to add to them with digressions like that.

Fro my experience with thee very parts (extensive),
you need to pull the shifter cable towards the
bracket, mount it, and then do the
adjustment/attachment on the trans end.

On this model, there are a pair of nuts securing the
cable housing at the shfter end. Moving them may or
may not be any help. In as many cars as I have built
with these parts, I have never had to make any
adjustments on the shifter end.

And the 700R4 arrangement on the XJS (and the
identical S2/S3 XJ6) shifter cable does not require
any extension bar ala JTR. That’s something typicall
required for a T350 trans…

Pull the cable to the bracket…

After thinking about my post and realizing that I was so close, I
went back under the car and started looking at things. I determined
that I had the Jag Cable Abutment piece on backwards. I oriented
with the offset toward the front of the car and I got it!! I now
have the transmission working correctly with the gear lever.

I wanted to document this little victory for the benefit of the
archives.

Thanks.–

Eric:

XLNT ! Pictures for the archives would be nice!

When I did mine, the shifter cable parted during the installation
adjustment process!! At least it was in the driveway as opposed to
somewhere on the road!

We installed a new cable. We noted it was too long! We cut off
about 4 or 5 inches as I recall with a tubing cutter?
But, it was a diferent adapter and lever that we mounted to the
4l60E transmission.

It now works just fine.

Hi Eric,
I just read some of your posts about installing a gear selector cable. Do you have any photos you can share? I am trying to install a gear selector cable on my 87 XJS. As you know, there are two entrances to the transmission tunnel inside the car, one where the cable attaches to the trans and another about a foot or so towards the back of the car. Between these two entrances, the cable is attached to the trans or the tunnel wall with a bolt or clamp of some kind. I stuck my hand in there and I can feel where the cable is attached but there is no way I can get any tools at that location. Maybe the bolt or clamp is reachable from underneath the car if one removes an exhaust pipe. Do you recall the issue I am talking about and if so how did you get to the bolt or clamp?

My existing cable does not shift any gears because the cable is not rigid enough at the shifter. You mentioned that you were considering adding some cable using compression fitting to solve your problem. Do you think a similar approach would make the cable more rigid, for example if I got a very rigid rod and attached it to the cable so the cable will again do its job?

Your thoughts are greatly appreciated.
