[modern] Age

With the wealth of information that many of the members have and the amounts
of Jags owned I feel as if I may be in the minority, age wise, around here.
I feel like junior taking advice at grandpa’s knee. Heh. Being 23 I’m
curious to see if there are other Jag owners in the same range on the list.
This is my first Jag (of many I hope). I’ve had several people comment that
I’m a bit young to drive a Jag but I think that’s just a silly prejudice. I
think an XJ6 is the perfect ride for someone in their 20’s, 30’s, whatever.
I guess people would be more at ease if I was driving a lowered Honda Civic
with tinted windows and a big stereo. Heh.

I think Ted [XJS list] is 18, and $teve, on sabbatical while attending
college, was only 17, as I recall, when he got his Ser III car.

Too young? Naw. Congratulate yourself for having good taste in

Mind you - as the youngest faculty member here - when I showed up with my

I got my XJ12 when I was 25. And I was upgrading from… you guessed it, a
Honda Civic. But mine wasnt lowered and with ten bass tubes in it.

I sometimes felt like people were thinking " nice of his dad to lend him his
car" or something along those lines. Not anymore, maybe Im gettin old at 28.

My father also got his first Jag around the same age. I believe the first
one was a 63 (65?) E-Type Roadster in British Racing. After that he had
several more until the early eighties. Now they’ve finally gotten back into
cats by getting an XJ8 and now a S-Type. It runs in the family so I had
tradition to keep up. Now, if only I can get my hands on that E-type we’ll
be set.

Alex,
A couple of things.

My '88 does EXACTLY like yours does when it comes to the headlights. The

headlights only come on when the ignition is turned to “ON”. The car
doesn’t have to be running. If I forget to turn the lights off when I leave,
the parking lights remain on until the battery drains. BTW, the lights
under the hood act exactly the same way as the headlamps. As does the trunk

While I am no longer 23, like you, I bought my first Jaguar in 1974 when

I was 24. The difference was that there were VERY few Jaguars around and
even less places to get parts or service. Mine was a 1962 Mark II 3.8L. It
was a HUGE 4 door saloon with flip down trays when everyone else was driving
MG convertibles and VW bugs/microbuses.
Think about this: It took me 2 years to find the original leaping cat
for the hood. The first one was stolen from the car before I bought it. When
I first bought the car, it took me a month to get it running. It had been in
storage for 8 months before I bought it. It would sputter and stall, but not
run. It was not until I ran into a guy in the Boston area who restored them
that I found out the problem. Unlike the American cars, the British cars
were positive ground --not negative ground like they are now. I was lucky I
didn’t burn out the whole system as it tried to run backwards!
I think the XJ40 is a perfect ride for you. Classy, powerful and easy to
work on. Plus now you have a list of people that can help you solve a
problem at the speed of light. It doesn’t get much better. My 16 year old
wants to drive mine to High School when she gets her license and she has a
friend with a vanity license tag that says “WANNAJAG”. (The tag is on an old
BMW, BTW).

And my Mark II ?? After spending three years restoring it back to it's

original grandeur, some 12 and 13 year olds snuck into a garage I had it
stored and set the whole thing on fire. Nine cars were destroyed in the fire
including my Jag and a 1921 Bentley a friend of mine was restoring. The kids
were caught, but nothing was done because of their age. (speaking of age!)

Hey there,

I always get comments from my friends that I’m too young for a Jag! I’m
22, and it seems that most my friends think Jaguars are for older
people. Of course, when they get a ride in it, they usually forget
about the age comments and fall in love with it!! I think as long as
you like the car, you don’t have to worry about what others say!! It is
my first Jaguar as well!

I wanted to buy a car and my choices where really limited since I
already have a BMW 5 series… so no BMWs… I don’t really like
Mercedes Benz (big steering wheels, and not sporty enough) and I hate to
drive anything with front-wheel drive (so no Acura/Audi). Lexus are
amazing cars (and I’m sure I would’ve never had so many trips to the
mechanic), but they really lack styling - I guess no pedigree, huh?? I
always liked Jaguars but back home, they’re almost non-existent, so I
thought I’ll give it a go since now I’m in Canada. Plus, with a 322
horsepower engine, you can beat any lowered Civic!! The problem is, I
get all the stares from older women!!

I love the car and don’t think twice about any comments. People always say

Hi,

I’m 26 and have a 1995 XJR.

Tim

I’m only 17 and this is my second jag. The first was a '90 XJ6 that was
totaled in a collision and I took the insurance money and bought my current
'91 VDP (a much better car both condition-wise and luxury-wise as well as
having fewer miles.) I have friends tell me that they think its a “grandpa
car” but I love it and can’t imagine ever driving one of those little Honda
aluminum can things.

a year now and I can’t drive anything else esspecially BMW 3 series!!. I
think that the 318 should be labelled as the Ultimate Waiting Machine!!!.
Waiting for power that is!!. the 328 and 330 are resonably powered but a bit

never a 3 series or anyone of those american cars. American cars are loud,
poorly built, cheap interiors, and are hard to fix…( wiper blade

I’m a 25yr old male, I have a '97 XJ6, my first car was a Jaguar (74 XJ12L;
the one I liked more of the two), my last car will be a Jaguar, and I will
be buried holding a leaper. Would having my ashes scattered or put to rest
in Coventry be going too far?

Its hard to say what the best thing England gave to me… 2 wonderful years
of travel and hospitality, or Jaguars. Both!

<<$teve, on sabbatical while attending college, was only 17, as I recall,

So Steve is at college. I remember his great angst until he got his SIII and
his exuberance once her acquired it.

That same exuberance is what sparks the many varied discussions on these
lists. Great stuff!

John
90 XJ6

Ok then, I’ll add my age to the list. I’m 30, though I had my first Jag
was I was twenty-six. First was an 91 XJ40 Sovereign, the second I got
at twenty-eight and is a 95 XJR. That’s my current car.

I also got the ‘too young for a Jag’ nonsense, but only from people
whose opinion on cars was limited to the boy racing stuff. I’d already
driven one of the finest street racers money can buy, but these people
didn’t understand that either. I’m talking about the original Mini -
zero top speed, but handling like no other car on earth. I regularly use
to embarrass much more expensive cars on twisty roads round

Given that I’d already driven the best of its type, and also that the
mileage I was doing was starting to increase, I decided it was time for
a change. I’d always loved Jaguars, I was lucky enough to be in a
reasonable job so could afford one, and so I thought - why not?

Never looked back really. Now, in combination with Carolyn who I met
about a month before getting the XJ40, we have an XJR, a new Mini and an
Eunos Roadster. All notable cars in their field. Very happy with them
all.

Cheers,
Ian

I have to disagree slightly with you on this one…the BMW 330 is an
amazingly fast car for the size. The power that comes out of that 6
cylinder is quite nice. And don’t forget the M3. That car can strip the
rubber of the tires with over 300 horsepower.

If you don’t like loud cars, then my opinion doesn’t count, but I have a 78
Corvette that’s loud, fast, and real fun to drive. Since I drive a quiet,
responsible car like the Jag everyday, it’s a nice change to get into a big,
meaty car like the Corvette. Heh. Usually American cars are cheap to fix.
My Mustang was so inexpensive to maintain, it didn’t make sense. In 6 years
of owning the car, I spent $500 on maintenance. Nice.

Regardless, now that I’ve had the Jag, nothing else will satisfy. Next on
the list, a mid-nineties XJR!!

Hello to everyone. Don’t post as often as I should, but I’ve enjoyed being a
part of this list for over 4 years. I joined a few months before buying my
'90 Sovereign in July of '98 (The beginning of my sophomore year in high
school. I’m 20 now). At the time, I believe I was the only one in town that
had one or at least drove it daily. This, as you can imagine, was an amusing
situation. Living in a moderately sized community I can count on one hand
how many Jags are in the entire county. Today I only see 2 or 3 others that
are out being driven ('95+ Models). I’m glad to see that there are a few
other young-er drivers as well. As for my car, I’ve put ALOT of miles on
her. She had a little over 100K when purchased. But beautiful she still is
and drives beautifully too. She’s now approaching 190K and just completed a
round trip from FL to NY. I’m surprised that people STILL mistake it for a
newer vehicle. Although, I’m sure a few of you are just as anal as I am when
it comes to the caring of your car, LOL. I have no reason to part with her
other than my interest in a newer one.

Been thinking about a newer car for the last year and I honestly can’t make
up my mind. I’m considering a '94 or '95. If I go with another 6 I would
probably choose the '95 or possibly a '94 VDP. I’ve also got a little bug
for power though and those '94 XJ12s are very tempting.

How does the performance and parts availability compare for the '94 and '95
XJ6?
How does it compare for the 12?

What would your choice be between a '94 XJ12 and '95 XJ6?

Any fresh comparisons comments or suggestions are greatly appreciated?
Looking forward to the new lists, Patsy.
