[modern] Bonnet supports/struts

Howdy All:

Well, i am not sure, but it appears the gas cylinders that hold the
hood/bonnet up are weaker than they should be. if the car is not perfectly
level, or if there is a small breeze, the hood has a nasty habit of crashing
down on one’s head!

I assume this is not how Jaguar intended it to be.

I searched the local parts shops and found no aftermarket repalcement for
the jaguar. I am left at the mercy of the Jaguar dealer who wants a kings
ransom for a set.

I searched the archives an found a total of two emails regarding this topic,
and neither was much help unfortunately. I apologize in advance if my search
skills are poor and this has already been covered in detail.

Two Questions:

  1. Has anyone out there found a reasonably priced set hood supports? Could
you tell me where I might get them?

  2. When the supports are new, should the hood raise under the force of the
supports (with a little help to get it started) or are they designed simply
to hold the hood in place, and not really raise it?

Any vendors out there (Coventry West etc) who might be reading this, are
more than welcome to send me their prices and approx delivery costs. I live
in southern Ontario Canda.

Thanks all!!

Not XJ40 related, but i wandered into my local Bap/Geon store and they had
struts fro my XJS that were a LOT less expensive then what the dealer wanted
and 100x easier than the comical hoops that some of teh XJ-S listers were
doing as alternatives (go to a junk yard, find a 1988 Dodge Daytona haatch
back, shave 1/2 in in machine shop, add spacesers, etc!!!

Try that. Remember, its just a CAR. There is nothin sacrosanct about hood
or trunk struts!

Here in li’l old Tasmania, remote back corner of Australia as we are, there
is at least one local shop that specialises in recharging gas struts. I had
mine done for AUD$15 each.

All they do is drill a little hole in the cylinder, re-pressurise the gas
and seal it off again. As Wayne says, there is nothing special about Jaguar
gas struts, they are all the same, and as they get old, they all lose gas.
The re-pressurised ones feel as good as new and it’s 2 years since I had
them done. It was a same-day service.

Darren,

I have the same probem with worn-out struts (gas
cylinders). My friend had them replaced and at least
the bootlid lifts by the help of the struts when you
lift the lid just a little. I believe this should be
the same with the bonnet struts.

Here’s what to do: take off one of the struts and
measure the total length. Also, check how powerful the
strut is, i.e. how many Newtons it can lift. This
information is printed on the plastic part of the
cylinder.
With this information, you can find non-original
struts that fit the Jaguar.

They won’t be cheap but you might find cheaper than
Jaguar’s original ones.

My friend ordered through mail order, I can’t remember
the price but he saved quite a lot compared to
originals from the importer.
