[modern] English Owned Factory

Help,

Last night, I had a neighbor insult my 98’VDP by
calling it a Ford. He went on to say that there are
no car factories owned by the English. I said (out of
defense, and a blind rage, and not all knowing) that
Bentleys were still owned by the Brits. I did speak
out of rage, but am I right.

Thanks

Bob,

No, Bentley is either VW or BMW, can’t remember which. One got Bentley, the
other Rolls Royce. I think VW has Bentley. There are no English car
companies anymore except little guys like TVR. On the other hand, unless he
has a Porsche, you could degrade just about any car he might have, calling
it a Dodge, Rover, Seat, whatever. Does the Mercedes take-over of Chrysler
make their cars any worse?

I think Bentley are owned by VW these days.
All we’ve got left are a few specialist manufacturers like TVR.

Hi Guys,

Sadly Bentley went to VW a couple of years ago but we still own Morgan and
TVR. Morgan’s have a 5 year waiting list and TVR make the best sports cars
in the world - well a lot better than Maserati anyway (just one
non-reviewers opinion of course :>)

I’m afraid not. Bentley and Rolls-Royce were bought out by VW and BMW.
British-owned marques, other than MG Rover, tend to be specialists:
Morgan, Sebring, AC, TVR, etc.

On the other hand, it is worth noting that while British firms are no
good at supplying capital for car making (“owning marques” indeed - VW’s
shareholders are mostly German banks!), they are rather good at
designing and building cars. Ford’s policy on Jaguar, for example, is
that “Jaguar must remain green” - Landrover, Volvo, and Aston Martin
similarly benefit from Ford’s resources, but are carefully kept at arm’s
length.

It is also worth noting that “ownership” aside, Jaguars, Rolls,
Bentleys, Aston Martins, Minis, and Landrovers are - in order to keep
their marques’ values - always going to be built and designed in
Britain. Which can’t be such a terrible thing, surely, as Toyota moved
its R&D division to the Midlands, 9/10 F1 cars being designed (and 7/10
built) in Britain…

Thanks All,

To all who replied, a BIG THANKS for your answers and
support. It’s not that I dislike Fords. I owned a
Pinto ounce. Now it’s full of concrete and an anchor
for my boat. I just get defensive when someone calls
my baby a half breed (his term not mine). Anyhow, as
always I enjoy reading your comments.

Cheers

Why do people get defensive or insulted by what other people think about your car? Who cares? Its not like they are talking about your wife or your kids. I buy whatever car I get for me, why should I care about others comments.>
