[modern] fuel economy of x-type

Hi.

I was wondering what kind of mileage people get with their x-types. I have
the 2.5L engine with a manual transmission. The window sticker says I
should be getting 19 city/ 28 highway MPG. Just to let you know, I do city
driving almost exclusively. I live in NW Washington DC, work in Arlington
VA and attend school in NE DC-my driving range is basically a 6x6x6mi
equilateral urban triangle. However, my mileage has been pathetic. I have
been getting between 13.5 and 14 MPG, according to the car’s computer. This
seems to be WAY off. I also drive rather conservatively. Also, the car
seems a little jerky sometimes when I accelerate or let off the gas pedal-as
if the fuel isn’t being regulated properly.

So, my questions are: Is anyone else getting mileage as poor as this? Does
anyone know of possible causes or reasons for this? Could it have to do
with some sort of internal computer? Is this behaviour normal? Should I
get it checked?

Thanks for any advice!

Brad

Brad,

I’ve noticed that the trip computer in my XKR is pretty conservative.
It under-estimates my actual mileage (odometer miles / gallons at the pump)
by at least a full mile per gallon. I think the first thing to do is to
calculate your actual MPG the old fashioned way.

you should check how many miles you really get out a tank just to make sure
it’s not the trip computer which woudl be off.

14 MPG seems low, fwiw I get close to 13 in the XKR, with a very heavy
foot…

BTW, in case you have missed the announcement, you should sub’s to the new
X-type list, most of the X owners have moved there, modern will soon be shut
down. details on the list split : www.jag-lovers.org/modern/newlists.htm

Interestingly enough, those of us who have migrated over to the x-type
list have already had a long thread on just this topic. You may want
to look at the past two days archives to read the details.

Overall, those who commented all tend to get between 17 and 22mpg in the
city and 21 to 26 highway. I have the 3.0L automatic and consistently
get 21.5 around town despite weather, driving conditions, and my lead
foot. If your mileage is that poor, I’d be concerned as well. Even my
old V12 did better than that.

If you’re relying on the average mileage reported by the trip computer
over a long period of time then it is likely to be very low and not
exactly accurate. Look at what the corresponding average speed is and
it is likely to be much lower than you would have expected.

I suggest trying a few controlled tests to verify. Reset your trip meter
to flush out all the old averages and check the new data at the end of
your usual commute. Try the same thing over a long freeway drive as well.

It usually goes without saying, but stay away from the unknown generic
gas stations and stick with fuel that you have more confidence in.

Bradley,
With a drive that short, especially over the cooler months your mileage
is probably about on target. The computer is running the engine rich until
you get warmed up fully and I’ve noticed that short drives on mine, a 2.5
Auto also generate lousy mileage figures. Do yourself a favor and fill up
before getting on Rt 66 and drive her out to Front Royal or beyond on the
Interstate then get off and refill, I’ll bet your mileage is up around
25mpg. I have yet to do better than 25 on a tank, but with only 1500 miles
on the car, she hasn’t even broken in yet.

On another note, Have you joined the National Capitol Jaguar Owners Club?
I’m about 75 miles NW of you, I retired from Arlington and bought the Jag as
a retirement present. Have a good one, and don’t worry to much about your
mileage on those short drives. She just needs a little room to open up.----- Original Message -----

Hi Everybody, I just wanted to check in on this thread and tell you that we
are splitting the Modern list into five smaller lists and that there is a
separate list for the X-type. A lot of the X-type owners have moved to this
list already, and unsubscribed from Modern. It’s okay to post messages to
Modern, but it would probably be better to move to the X-type list.

I get 19 city/27 highway in my '88xj40 …
I change the oil/filter every 2000 miles & clean the
air filter almost every weekend. Cleanin the air
filter alone can inc. the milage quite a bit.
