[modern] Gas Cap Flap Problems on 89 VDP

All of a sudden, I can’t open the flap over the gas cap by pressing down on
the end - I have to use the level inside the trunk to pop it open so that I
can add fuel. Sadly enough, I have the service docs, the owner’s workshop
manual, and the Chilton manual, but can’t find any information about how to
resolve this or how the thing works in the first place. My kingdom for a
useful index and more general troubleshooting guide!

I’d appreciate it if anyone could tell me what the problem might be and how
to resolve it. As always, thanks!

Bill,
I have a different setup on my car…a lever next to the seat I pull
to open the hatch, but likely the trouble I had is similar to yours…
The thing would not open, because the metal hinge with built in spring
(bent piece of spring steel) had cracked and rusted.

I removed the hatch(cover) and the hinge arm, and brazed it up
with my torch, painted it, greased the spring part, adjusted it, and
for almost 3 years now its been fine.
After I did the work, I found the thing has a friction point to hold
it open…it did not do that when I got the car…it sort of flapped
around.
Now, when I pop the lever, the hatch comes up 1/2 an inch, and when
you open it all the way, it sticks in the open position.
I assume it was designed to work this way…
Glad you reminded me…its due for some grease I think…

Bill and List:

I had this same problem four years ago. Apparently, the engineers at Coventry
had invented a highly eloborate lock system as you know that is pressure
activatedd, i.e. you push down on it and it pops up to open. This is a one
piece assebly only available from Jaguar. The dealer replaced mine for some
astonomical price (I think about $350 as I recall). They said it was not
servicable. Strangely, I believe them. The only recourse is to use the
emergency opener in the trunk. Good luck.

well…i can’t get my gas flap to stay closed. it’s shut when i
leave…but open when i get to my destination. this usually happens no
matter what the distance i travel. 30 miles…5 miles…the gas flap will
be open. i find it somewhat emabarassing.
