[modern] Michelin Tires vs OEM Pirrelli

Hi Cat people,

Its time for new tires for my XJ8. OEM Pirrelli P4000E are 150$ a
pop. Michelin has the the Symetry, XW4 and MXV4 and 86$ each.
Does anybody have these on there Jags. Any comments on the Michelin tires
will be appreciated. Enrique

Enrique,

A lot of people like the MXV4, but I have been reading your posts for a long
time and I think that you would really hate them because they aren’t a good
match for your driving style. They are okay if you just want to drive around
town in comfort, but if you really drive the way you say you do, you aren’t
going to like them at all.

check out the web site, although most comments are related to earlier car,
some will apply.

FWIW, I tried MXV4s on my V12 E-type and didn’t like. Noisy, no grip, vague
handling… but off course my idea of handling is slightly different…

I then swithed to P6000ZR which are excellent. I now have Pzeros, but the
P6000 are very close in performance and available a taller profile.

The downside to the grip is wear… the MXV4 still had plenty off thread
left when I got rid of them… the P6000 and Pzeros are softer and wear
faster…

check www.tirerack.com they have a lot of info and side by side tests

Hi Enrique,
I got Pirelli’s for my old XJ6 on line for $74.00. each. I could not
find a local shop with the SAME tire for under $139.00. Try
http://www.vulcantire.com for a price.

Enrique –

I just went to Michelin’s about 3,000 miles ago after
the Pirellis wore out in just over 20,000 miles. The
Michelins are V rated opposed to the Pirelli Z rating,
meaning that I’m only safe up to 149 miles per hour and
not at sustained speeds past 149. Oh Darn!

Seriously, the MXV4 I put on were less expensive, did
not harm the appearance or the handling of the car and
are not noticeably nosier than the P4000s. They seem to
be better in the rain than the Pirellis and while no V
or Z rated tire will be offered with a mileage
guarantee, the Consumer Report report card on the V
rated Michelins put them in the 35 to 40K range before
wear bars beginning to show.

I have no problem recommending Michelins

Depending on your driving style you might want to check out Dunlop Sport
5000’s as well. I ended up going with them on my '94 XJ-6 (Z-rated 16"
wheels) after considering Michelin, Yokohama and Kumho. I found them
cheaper and as good if not better than the Michelin’s. They may not be
the best for really aggressive driving (which doesn’t bother me as I
have the XK8 with Pirelli’s for that) but overall they’re a good
compromise.

Too early for me to provide driving impressions given I’ve only put 10
miles on them.

Well, the timing couldn’t be more perfect. Just this past Saturday, I put two
new Pirrelli P4000’s on my car. I had two Michelin MXV4’s on the front that
were almost new and I had two Pirrelli P4000’s on the back that were almost
bald. I priced the Michelin’s and in Alabama they were running about $150-$170
each. the Pirrelli’s I found a complete price (mounting, balancing, free
lifetime rotations, etc.) for $99.00 plus tax. I put the new Pirrelli’s on the
front and the Michelin’s on the back. I think the car rides and handles very
nicely now.

Sincerely,

I purchased my '94 XJ12 w/Michelin Symetry’s a year ago and I cannot
wait for them to wear out. They are at best average under normal
conditions and poor in the wet or snow.

That being said, I have used happily run on Michelins in the past and
will likely upgrade to Pilot Sports once I can convince my wife that it
is time to spend for new tires. In the meantime, you will find me doing
doughnuts in the parking lot of my local supermarket.

Hate to say it, but I dont think tire choice is going to help you all that
much in the rain or snow with the XJ12. I have Bridgestone Turanza Z on my
XJ12 and a little rain and I am all over the place. Dont know what would
happen in snow, but it hasnt snowed here since 1943 so I am not all that
worried.

The XJ12 combination of rear wheel drive, prodigious torque and HP does not
help any brand of tires. Plus most of the big Jaguars do not have a stellar
reputation for great snow handling.

I have to disagree with you here…

My '76, even with all the tweaks I did to make big power, was an
out-and-out tank in the snow!

I would go when others couldn’t.

Same here in Houston. The V-rated MXV4’s were 175$ mounted & balanced & the
Z-rated P4000’s were $120. Plus the worn out P4000’s I took off still
handled rain better than half worn MXV’s on other cars I have driven. And
yes, those cars had good suspensions.

Try the Pirelli 4000 Super Touring W rated (189 mph I think), $97 each installed
and balanced at tires plus (local tire chain). I get about 30 40K and drive
hard but kept hem at 32 and 36 lbs It is actually the latest tire and some of
the dealers didn’t have it in their book when I called for pricing. Told me
there was no W rated tire. Since I own them and find the ride and handling
excellent I’d suggest you ask for a price on Super Touring 4000’s rather than
4000e which I have never seen or used. (I had 4000 VR rated prior). I can even
get the almost the same price from non Pirelli dealers so you should be able to
find one. Give them a shot.

I think that if you are really concerned about winter driving,
and actually intend to drive in the snow for a few months,
then you don’t run all-seasons. The “new” snow tires are
light years ahead of the best all seasons.

Traction trouble in the rain? Underdrive your supercharger,
lay off of the NOS and release the transmission brake below
3500 RPM. Should take care of it!

Enrique,
I love Michellins’, I have Pilot Sport XGT Z4’s on my XJR
right now, they’ve given 18000 miles of faultless service and still
have over 60% tread life left…

I’m changing over to 19" wheels and will be using them again…well,
not the same Tires because I won’t beable to squeeze them on…

My wife has MXV4’s on her 2000 VW Bug, 15000 miles later they’re
still great…but it’s not a Jag.

It depends on your driving style really…

Go to www.tirerack.com and check your options out…

Cheers
peter.
