[modern] new xj40 owner:radio swap

Hi,
I have just recently purchased a 88 3.6 sov , I have had the car for
about 3 weeks and everything works o.k , dash ,a/c ,SLS , windows ,locks
although the cruise seems to do its own thing from time to time ( sticky set
button) . I am not a novice when it comes to cars , after all I have owned
alfa romeo’s and rovers so I now have a full understanding of electrical
problems and cars that fall to bits . My car is absolutly mint except for
saggy roof lining (although after reading some of the archives this problem
is not rare) .the car in question drives better than some Rolls royces I
have driven so happy ,Yes i am.
The question i want to know is can I straight swap a radio from a
later xj40 (i.e with cd function) with mine , as i dont want to mess around
with the cars electrics as they seem a little fragile from what i have read
( and i am sure it started the electrical rot in my last alfa) .Also I seem
to be getting very good fuel economy about 22-24 mpg ?? is this right (
drive at about 60-70 on the open roads and am not shy around town either)
I bought the car due to a fastination i have had since i was 17 yrs old and
my boss let me loose in his S1 xj6 it was manual and bright red with a
webasto sunroof ,Oh how my friends were all jealous it was just so smooth
and a real head turner .18 years later i realise a dream and now have my own
sitting on the drive albiet an xj40 and blue, It may not turn heads anymore
or make my friends jealous but when i am driving her with the music blasting
, the smell of leather all around me and i bury the throttle into the
lambswool rug I am that 17 year old again with a stupid grin that goes from
ear to ear (only now i have a wife that tells me to grow up instead of
parents!!!).

Neil,

The newer radios are not a direct replacement, the connectors
are different.
A 1991 radio has the outputs for the woofers under the rear
seat, the later models don’t.
The newer radios are no improvement over the early ones,
they are more prone to display problems and chips inside
failing.

Also I seem

to be getting very good fuel economy about 22-24 mpg ?? is
this right

My trip computer reports similar mpg…not sure how accurate it
is…

I think you may still get some looks at the car…

Neil,

Dunno nothing 'bout the radio but those figures are
VERY typical. I haven’t met anyone who would have
other figures (unless he’s driving a lot in town, very
hard or like).
