[modern] Signs of the Apocalypse - new owner

I’ve posted a few times to this list, and a few of you may recall my search
for the X300 last spring. A number of you probably know me from other lists.

Well, the search has ended. I have procured a lovely white '95 VDP for my
wife so I could slow the torrent of complaints about non-operative
accessories on the '85 XJ6. It has just over 40K miles and is in excellent
condition, so I’m very pleased.

I have two questions. The first one is probably simple. One light in my
climate control display is not working. I’ve noted the ski slope removal
procedure in the FAQs, but I was wondering if anyone knows what bulb goes in
there so I have a replacement before I tear into it.

Second. My older son, sitting in the back, noticed what sounded like bearing
noise at the right rear. It was loud enough that I should have heard it on
the test drive, but I didn’t hear a thing. My wife, sitting in the back
didn’t hear anything either.
As we accelerated up a freeway ramp crossing through 30 to 35 mph, my son
said, “it stopped.”

I couldn’t hear it over the road noise at that point. “It did?”

“Yes. It went away, came back for a second and quit.”

I can’t say that I’ve ever heard of a bearing that makes noise
intermittently, but then I don’t work on cars for a living.

Does it sound like a bearing to you folks or might there be some other
explanation?

Mark,

The bulb is a bayonet cap type that clips in, it’s probably proprietary,
although the bulb fitted to the bayonet cap could be changed if you have
the time, I’d get 2 and change them both whilst you are in there.
Removal of the control panel is exactly the same as on an XJ40. ie
remove central ash tray, (2 screws, shut it first) to reveal 2 wing nuts
underneath wood near to sport / normal switch, ease out sky slope, then
unscrew 6 screws holding climate control / radio / other switches in
place, easing cables out as you go. Remove back of climate control and
unscrew bulb. Climate control unit can be unscrewed from the back of its
plastic mounting if you need to get better access.

As for the noise, I’d suspect either the wheel bearing, or the diff
might be low on lube. On the X300, the diff output shaft seals start to
weep lowering the lube level and killing the diff. As the car doesn’t
leak when you are stationary you don’t know about it until it starts to
whine on deceleration.

Regards,

Kevin

On my '95 it was one of those sub-miniature bulbs in a plastic holder with
the bulb wires wrapped around it. I understand from the dealer though that
not all units are the same. The good news is that gaining access is
relatively straightforward - the whole job can be done in half an hour once
you’ve done in the first time. Check the X300 online guide for details.

Sounds like the symptoms of my output shaft bearing in my XJ-40…it
would quit when the suspension was unweighted.

I don’t know if the X300 has the same diff or not but if so, I would check
that bearing first. It’s fairly easy to get out if it’s the same as the XJ-40.

Jeb

Do you mean unweighted, as in no one sitting in that corner of the car, or
totally unweighted as in the corner off the ground? Did temperature make any
difference?

The only time I’ve heard a bearing act like that is in small fans, like
computers, where they vibrate and it comes and goes, but they aren’t under a
load like a axle or diff bearing. Temperature does make a difference in that
case. I’ll get under there and check it out.

I’ll look for weeping at the diff, too.

My son has had the car for a few days and hasn’t heard it since.

Strange, very strange.

Snip

Mark,
I have a 96 VDP 86 k miles with a similar noise near the rear. I have
attributed mine to the vapor recover system module near the fuel tank.

My noise is a kind of chirping that varies with throttle position, engine
RPM, and outside temp. I seams to be most prevalent with the throttle close
and the engine at RPM slightly above idle. It can also be heard driving
slowly down the street. It goes away as soon as I open the throttle.

I found a breather module next to the fuel tank under the car passenger
side. When I remove the module the noise goes away. I am currently trying
to figure out which valve sends vacuum to the module and why the module
creates the chirping whistle. This system is unique to the VDP as Alldata
does not show it in their online repair manual.

The rear end is pretty quite but the input seal is starting to leak. I just
check the fluid level when I change the oil.

When I figure it out I will post to the X300 list.
