[modern] Stupid question

Hello all,

I have a stupid question: Is there any major difference between pre-1994
XJ40’s and 1994 XJ40’s?

Thanks in advance,

Dave

( applies to US cars )

The major cutoff is with the beginning of the 1993 model year. 1993s and
1994s have a lot of differences whem compared with 88 through 92 models,
mainly superficial, namely, they have driver airbags some 1994s have
passenger airbags as well, different interior designs, dropping of the ride
leveling suspension on many models in 1993 and most models in 1994,
redesigned front air dam and fog light enclosures,

These are the major differences, there are also differences in suspension,
body frame construction etc, initiated to fit the V12 engine to the XJ40
which began in 1993.

In general the 1993 and 1994 models are considered by far the best XJ40s to
own for reliability and quality. However, if I have misinterpreted and you
were asking if there were any major differences between 1993 and 1994
models, aside from the airbag on XJ6 models, not much difference.

Hi David

Your question is not at all stupid. The late XJ40s
are something of a hybrid.

The one area that I know of is the rear suspension.
Mine is a 1994 XJ40 Gold and has the later X300 rear
suspension - I just managed to find this out in time
before buying new shock absorbers, also the procedure
for changing the shock absorbers is very different -
try using the the ‘XJ40’ procedure and I guess you
would have a spring flying around.

I also think that the steering rack and transmission
may be different, certainly the transmission gauze
filter is not as deep in my car - as I found when I
tried to fit one supplied by my local Jaguar Dealer.

I’m sorry to see the list splitting, firstly because
if I see an interesting looking post, I’ll read it
even if it is about an XKR that I know I can’t afford
and secondly from a selfish point of view, because I
own a late XJ40 hybrid, I think that the XJ40/X300
split is somewhat artificial (and yes I know I can
subscribe to both lists).

Dave,
Major differences?

The 1994 never had the hydraulic suspension that the top
of the line 1993 had, and I think the ac system uses R134a.

I think there were some minor improvements to the engine management
system, better injectors, and some other small improvements.

A 1994 is a very good car if it was taken care of.

Hello all,

I’d just like to point out that for Europeans - us Brits included - the
main revisions took place with the 1989 and 1993 model years.

The 1994 never had the hydraulic suspension that the top
of the line 1993 had, and I think the ac system uses R134a.
I think there were some minor improvements to the engine management
system, better injectors, and some other small improvements.

One big change was that Ford’s first major investments post-1989 was the
installation of a pair of extremely modern assembly lines, a new paint
plant, and did a major reorganisation of the Browns Lane factory. This
made a major difference to the build quality and paint quality of models
from the early 1990s.

Anyway, yes, a good few little improvements were made, and I’d add that
the brakes were revised for 1993 (new Teves system), the stereo system
was improved, the driver’s airbag was standardised, and the interior
trim was updated. Funnily enough, there’s not terribly much difference
between the last two production years of the XJ40 and the first two of
the X300 - other than the body shape and the revised AJ16 engines and GM
5-speed auto gears. The interior, for example, remained the same!

A 1994 is a very good car if it was taken care of.

Agreed! The only with mine so far have either been service-related
(brake pads, fluids, that kind of thing) and damaged electricals which
the PO could, and should, have dealt (cracked headlight, stuck aerial,
stuck mixer flaps). But yes, it’s a beautifully-running car, and still
turns a few heads. X300s are sleeker but thanks to the extra
colour-coding, don’t have anywhere near as much eye-catching chrome.
