[modern] Tough time starting

My 88 XJ6 has a hard time starting in damp weather - I know this should be a
no-brainer but any suggestions? I’ve thought about changing/checking spark plugs,
wires and distributor. In snow its fine but when it rains all day it has a rought
start and continues to run rough. If i give it gass too quickly it threatens to stall
out. After a while its ok and I can give it gas and it just picks up and goes.

Jorge,

Sounds alot like plugs, wires, and or d-cap to me. My car was trying to
stall out after running through standing water (no snow here in Houston),
and once I changed out the plugs, wires, and d-cap, everything has been fine
since.

Jorge, I don’t know if your car has a distributor but if it does the cap
may have a crack. HTH, Enrique

Jorge,

This is indicative of bad plug wires. It they get bent the conductivity is not so good,
as they get old they get porous. I would suggest a new set of wires. I would also
suggest you clean all your electrical connections and apply dielectric lubricant and you
will be amazed at how much better it runs

Yes, wires cap and rotor.

You can get a lot better life out of these parts if you
spray everything with silicone.
This prevents water getting in things.

The wires need to be in their clips and not resting on the engine,
or touching anything else.
The inside of the cap should be clean and dry, use no
spray here, but the outside of the cap should have silicone on
it.

I can wash my engine with the hose without it being
effected and my car runs much better in moist conditions.

A miss is a bad thing to have, it can melt the catalytic
converters if your car has them.
