I thought Vanden Plas was a Dutch word meaning “Lah-De-Dah”!
“van den Plas” is Dutch for “From the lake”
Dutch surnames are quite often funny when you translate them literally. 
Now I come to think of it… My surname actually comes from the German word
for “Fox” (Fuchs) so I can’t comment on Dutch surnames.
