And keep in mind that some years of XJ40 had no valve at all. My 1990 is that way. Hot water always flows thorough the climate control unit and the blend flaps are supposed to isolate the heater matrix. I never had much faith in this so in the summer I use a clamping pliers to simply clamp off the heater hose to hopefully aid the AC performance.
Larry, how much does Rockauto charge for shipping to Canada?
That was my guess too about my valve. I got it in Sept. 2015 on Ebay but it allows me to check my purchase history back to 2017 only so I donāt know what valve I bought then. If I buy a valve that you got then I have to buy another heater hose CCC5734.
Iām going to just cut the existing hose a splice in the new valve, thatās the plan anyway, have to have a look tomorrow to see what room there is ā¦ Incidentally, I butchered up the old valve and made a fitting out of it for the new valve - thanks for the inspiration, I basically copied your idea. will; post a couple of pics in a minute.
Rockauto parts I usually get shipped to Seattle but I need the valve like, yesterday so I had the think sent to my place FedEx.

I think they eliminated it on the 90-92 models because the valve was problematic?
I thought about doing that too and letting my tired old blend flaps cope with it, but as summers are getting unbearably hot in Canada and my A/C only manages to get down so far anyway (10c - 50f), I thought Iād better get some kind of valve to help the old girl along!
Whoa! The price almost doubled with shipping. Dang!
After I plugged in the hole on the fitting, I put a hose clamp around it and put something (forgot what) between the clamp and the round metal disc to make sure it stays in place for a long time.
I want a working heater valve for the same reason as you. Itās already very hot down here and I wanna make it easier for the a/c system.
So I went to the local specialist hydraulic/tubing/pressure hose supplier and they had nothing I could use but said the machine shop round the corner could maybe make something up, so I went in and explained Iām trying plumb from the head to a hose fitting so I can splice in an aftermarket valve ā¦
So he measured the pipe size, said āoh - itās metricā - āwe wonāt be able to make anything like that.ā (Interesting because Canada has been on the metric standard for about 40 years afaik)
He said he could maybe cut the two ends off the valve and splice them together using a sleeve - sounded good to me so I said OK - but - then he said āIāll have to see if we have some sleeve material firstā and went to look for something. Came back with a length of plain ol electrical conduit which believe it or not, was a snug fit in the valve pipe end. Thinking of the cost of machine shop labour etc, I did a quick āI can do thatā, gave him a buck or two for the piece of conduit and came home, ready to do the job myself.
Larry, Iām anxious to see how the fitting turns out.
Anyway, this is what I made - I cut off the two ends of the valve, cut a short piece of conduit, cleaned it all up and put it together with LA-CO heatstik, using it like solder, ātinningā all contact surfaces first then adding small LA-CO fillets to the joints, inside and out.
It seems pretty solid, but I might line the ātubeā (and possibly sleeve it too) with JB weld later.
I guess some of you might be skeptical of the method, but I repaired an āun-repairableā A/C condenser with this stuff 5 years ago and sheās still holdinā.
The bits:
Larry,
das ist eine schone job you did there. Letās hope itāll last for a long time without leaking.
Diolch yn fawr, Joe - we can but hope eh
Probably some cost cutting effort eliminating the valve. My car has been converted by a dealer to R-34 from R-12 so the system is not as efficient as it was with R-12.

John, I agree and believe the cost cutting continued when they re-introduced the valve in later model versions.
The hybrid 93-94 valve eliminated quite a few components - the fitting and pipework at the head, two hose clamps, and a section of hose - all morphing into one for the later cars.
My guess is that someone on the assembly line got a canteen of cutlery for putting that āimprovementā in the suggestion box (probably the same guy that suggested eliminating the valve on your car!)
Larry, Iāve ordered a Four Seasons valve (74859, $23) and the heater hose ($10.44, both from ebay). I canāt reuse the current hose, itās cut for the valve-with a 90 degree water inlet/outlet-Iāve installed back in 2015. So our setup will look similar. Pictures for comparison?
So you got the 74859 and it looks like I got the 74858 ā¦whatās the difference?
The difference is the arrow on the side of the valve housing faces in another direction. I think thatās it.
Ok, no big deal then.
I decided to go a bit further with my valve replacement fitting, reinforced the joints with JB weld and coated the inside with it too.
The outside I did by saturating thin twine in JB then whipping over the joints. The twine reinforces the JB and keeps it from dripping away from where you want it. The brass nut is close but still turns freely.
Hopefully it is now sealed forever!
Wow Larry! You did a very neat job. It certainly looks better than mine. And looks like thereās still room for the hose clamp on the right side.
Did you actually receive the physical valve yet or just a promise? Just wondering.
I received the heater hose just today. I bought the valve from Autozoneās ebay page. I provided them my cell number but havenāt gotten a response yet.
