Part of gearbox , jaguar mk2 3.4

Hi to everyone! I just bought a jag mk2 3.4 here in Italy. The gearbox was noisy and so, my mechanic took off it from the car (with all the engine…) one mechanism is damaged but we aren’t able to find this piece on the catalogue or as spare parts on line. The serial number of the gear box is GBN 73297 JS with over drive. Is it a special gearbox? do you have any link ? We would like to change also all the bearings and all the gasket.

The jag hasn’t been kept in good shape and Ii’m trying to give her a new life! she brought my wife to the church!
Thanks, Giacomo

The part is C10201, Moss gearbox first gear.

AFAIK they are not available new. There are several on EBay. but whether they are better than yours or not is questionable.

The straight cut Moss box first gear is notoriously noisy and is often worn because of lack of synchro on first. I suspect they were noisy when new from the factory.

Bearings gaskets etc are available here

Someone who rebuilt my Mk 2 gearbox, left a small ball bearing in the bottom and on my maiden voyage that got picked up, went through the gears and got wedged between the input shaft and gearbox case. It bruised some teeth a lot worse than what you are showing, but I managed to " polish" them out with some fine sandpaper and the gearbox was fine after that, no noisier than any other Moss 'box. As Andrew said, these are noisy from new, especially in 1st and reverse but some are better than others. My opinion is that shouldn’t give you too much grief. I’ve seen and used worse.

That’s the condition of the gear… in the first post I just wanted to show which was the gear…
Thank you very much for your help, I was watching the synchromesh gearbox diagram and not the moss gearbox…

That’s badly damaged. Problem is your laygear (C10204 I think) may well look the same.

That’s in bad shape. Parts are scarce for these transmissions. I have two complete moss overdrive transmissions with the hopes to build one good one out of the two. I do have some loose gears I may let go of. I’ll see what I have.

Yes, that’s certainly worse than mine was. If you can’t source any parts, I’m sure a specialist engineering or transmission shop would be able to build up and regrind those teeth as a last resort, but there must be plenty around as many would have upgraded from a Moss 'box in the past.
