Please advice, Burman worm identification, is it for XK120?

Hi,
Number of years back I bought from UK the 2nd. hand LHD Burman worm for the spare to my LHD XK120.
According to the seller, it is from LHD XK120. Please advice, is it’s gearing for XK120 or MK V or what?

Please find attached the photo of this Burman worm including few measures and another photo with punched marking 75 on the flange.

Thanks in advance, Best regards Hannu

A friend of mine has just stripped his original XK 120 RHD steering box. just hoping these photos might be of help. The shaft with the worm is continuous. I believe that the worm is cut off and replaced when people change LHD boxes to RHD.

Hei Hannu,

See picture of the worm of my 1954 LHD XK 120. Unfortunately I didn’t take any measurements, but it looks identical to yours. I’ve no experinece with the Mk V worm for comparison.
Note that there is a slight pitting on the worm which I sanded a bit and after a complete rebuild I think the car steers very well.

Hi, Thanks for your photos, I can compare from your photos RHD worm against supposed to be LHD worm I have. I’m learning bit by bit. Best regards Hannu

One difference to be noted:
Mark V is a wider car and has the steering arm outboard from the column,

where XK120 being narrower has the steering arm inboard from the column.

Therefore, a RHD Mark V will have the square thread worm the same direction as a LHD XK120;
and a LHD Mark V will have the square thread worm the same direction as a RHD XK120.

Mark VII and Mark 1 also used steering boxes made by Burman with worm drives, though I do not know if they are close enough to provide substitute parts.

Hi, thanks for your photo, mine looks identical.
Meantime I received the kind message from Jeff Holman, Surrey, UK, that my spare Burman worm is definitely for XK120.
His Engineering company in Surrey, UK, machined / remanufactured and supplied in 2014 complete LHD Burman box and steering axle kit, which was later on fitted to my XK120.
His engineering company offers specialist services for the repair and remanufacture of classic, vintage and veteran vehicle components such as steering boxes, water pumps, gear boxes, differentials and engine components. Also one-offs. Highly recommended.
