Power steering?

1984 HE started the car yesterday and it had no power steering, i worked the steering back and forth and it was there although heavier less smooth than normal, took it out for a drive and it seemed ok unless i turned the wheel fast then it felt it couldn’t cope with fast. the fluid is fine and it has no leaks, the rack had new seals 5000 miles ago but the pump is 36 years old, is there anyway, on the car, to check the pump,

Did you check the belt ?

I will check. But I think I would have noticed. Just checked the belt is fine.

What happens if you turn the steering wheel lock to lock? You should hear the bleed valves work and will see what happens under the highest load. Check the belt tension first though.

I think the PS pump is a vane type pump. If so, your symptoms may indicate a stuck vane or two. Simplest fix would be a new PS pump.

These p/s pumps are i think GM? Cheap to buy rebuilt (about $80 with core swap?)

I am replacing mine preventativley this winter when i do p/s hoses. Only issue, you’ll need a puller to swap over the pulley.

True, cheap to buy but not to R&R.
