[pre-xk] Mark V Handbrake Cable

I’ve had an email from a Mark V owner asking about details of the three
different front cables used on the Mark V handbrake. So far we have guessed
that the only difference is length, that at first RHD cars had a longer
cable than LHD cars, but there must have been a problem with them getting
frayed from being too short, so later the factory fixed and rationalized the
situation with one longer length for all.

My question for the group is this.
The parts catalogue on p.51 calls out a C4005 Bracket, supporting rear of
Handbrake (1)
Then it says Fitted to Chassis No.s (gives all later cars with the longer
cable) and subs., as if this bracket was not on earlier cars with the
shorter cables.

My question is: what was this bracket, and where was it located?

The more I study this, the more I suspect a factory parts catalogue typists
error, that the bracket was holding up the handbrake handle about 6" from
the front end, therefore used on all cars, not just those subsequent to the
cable change.

Thoughts, anyone?

Not sure about the front. Mine is a Feb. 51 car so could zip to the barn &
look — where would extra bracket be?

Saw a rear cable at Beaulieu last weekend but for a 49/50 so did not buy.
Are they difficult to come by?

Maybe I’m looking at the wrong place in the parts catalog, but I’m
not clearly finding the problem as stated above. Maybe there are
variations in catalogs and/or parts. Here is what I see:

In ‘‘Spare Parts Catalogue for Jaguar Mark V Models’’, Publication
J.7, Published October 1949, on page 51 I don’t see a part C4005,
rather I see ‘‘C.3570 Bracket, supporting bottom of Handbrake’’ which
is part AZ107 on the Plate AZ on the un-numbered page facing 51. It
seems there is no other ‘‘Bracket’’ entry on page 51 and no entry
list variation with chassis number (only for RHD and LHD). I had my
handbrake assembly apart last year and observed that the assembly
looked very much like that in Plate AZ. My LHD American-export
chassis number is 628166.

Should I look somewhere else in the parts catalogue, should I look
at the parts catalog on the JDHT CD, or what further information
could I provide?–

Thanks, Roger.
In my book, also J7 Oct '49 but a reprint, bracket C4005 is directly below
bracket C3570 on page 51. You couldn’t have missed it, so it must not be in
your book. It would seem I have a corrected reprint, though the correction
may be incorrect.

I wonder if C4005 could have been originally listed in the body parts
section, and got moved later to the brake controls section?

Unless new information surfaces, I’m going to assume C4005 is the 3" tall
bracket supporting the handbrake handle tube, was on all cars, and probably
should have been drawn on Plate AZ directly above clip 114.

Thinking about it, my book couldn’t really have been printed in Oct '49; how
could they know the exact chassis numbers on changes which hadn’t occurred
yet? Must be a reissue from a later date.

Alan, the rear cable is different for fixed pivot vs. sliding pivot brakes,
different end fittings. The sliding pivot type have a clevis on the ends,
where the fixed pivot have a nut.

I was right not to buy the earlier type.

This has reminded me that last time I moved the car one bonded brake shoe
broke free of bondage, causing total lockup under tow… Must get rear shoes
relined.

MKIV started the trip to a show with a flat tyre this morning. Well done
Jaguar tool kit. Wheel changed & on my way in 15 minutes including minutes of
expeletives deleted.

Well, looking at the JDHT CD of parts manuals shows different
listings than on the original Mark V parts manual I mentioned
above. There were quite a few changes on the CD! The CD mentions
the part Rob brought up and even mentions a handbrake betweeen the
seats as superseding the umbrella handle. The umbrella handle in my
car has a bracket midway down the handle length which positions the
handle in combination with the bracket which mounts to the
firewall. Wonder if anyone has the handbrake between the seats? I
like the umbrella handle for style and so I can use the place
between the seats as a cup holder and for other items.–

Fascinating! I’m curious to identify it and learn more about it. Can you
quote the part numbers of the major parts? I wonder if it is the same parts
as for Mark VII?

The JDHT Parts Manuals CD shows the following:

For Mark V:
C.3276 Handbrake Assembly (Pistol Grip Type)(Girling No. GB.39641)
Under this heading is listed the C.3570 Bracket followed
immediately by the C.4005 Bracket. Many other parts under this
heading also.

The next heading says ‘‘SD.1007 CONVERSION KIT FOR INSTALLATION OF
SPECIAL HANDBRAKE (To replace ‘‘Pistol Grip’’ type for handbrake
mounted in centre of floor)’’

As well there are three front cable assemblies shown for the Mark V:
C.3378, C.3519, C.4799 shown as item AZ119 on Plate AZ.

For the Mark VII there are three handbrake assemblies shown, the
last of which C.6557 also was used in Mark VIII.–

Thanks for looking all this up, Roger.
What a pity it doesn’t give individual part numbers for this kit. I suppose
any of the three Mark VII handbrakes could be rigged up to work in the Mark
V floor with some cutting of holes in the right places. Perhaps the kit gave
instructions for cutting.

Wonder if there is anything in the Service bulletins CD?

BTW, what is the last RHD 3 litre chassis number? Is mine near it?

There is nothing in the printed Service Bulletins about the conversion kit,
surprising, really.
I found a couple of pictures on the web of Mark IX’s with automatic and
bench seat and they appeared to have the umbrella handle handbrake like Mark
V, though turned 90 degrees.

The last RHD 3.5 saloon is 625926.
http://www.jag-lovers.org/saloons/prc/mkvreg.html
To find the last saloon of all variations probably look at body numbers
close to G10500.

I may have discovered a clue to this old mystery of the change in the hand brake cables on Mark V.
I was looking through pictures of cars, trying to find where the return spring hooks on, and I found this car, 647367.
IMG_0026
The clip bracket where the front hand brake cable is attached is located in the center on the cross. This would make it possible to use the same cable for LHD and RHD.

Mine is located on the left hand side on the left center cruciform member.

I haven’t yet found a picture of an early RHD car, but perhaps it was on the opposite side on them?

And I found where to hook the lever return spring. There is a tiny hole in the chassis for it.
20230816_093111
The other end has an L-shaped clip that fits on the clevis pin, with a small hole for the spring.

And this might possibly be the special hand brake of the conversion kit to replace the pistol grip handle.

It looks pretty much like the Mark VII part.

I imagine you would drill some holes in the floor and put it between the seats.

Hi Rob,
Very interesting. I know the handbrake is a poor design on these cars. I’ve been told the MkVII assembly is a popular upgrade and ‘bolts straight in’ (although I have been burnt by that phrase before!)

Mine is an early RHD 621204. I’ll try and get a chance and see where the bracket is located on mine…

Yep, “bolts straight in” would not really be as easy as that. You certainly have to make the bolt holes and actuator hole first.
The driveshaft is between the floor and the rear section of the hand brake assembly, so somehow the action has to pass around it.
With the Mark VII it looks like there is a bracket and some linkage. I’ll look for a picture of a Mark VII chassis, maybe that will make things clear.

I asked a question on this forum back in 2005. I’m still thinking about it, not really sure if I ever got an answer.
What is C.4005 Bracket supporting rear of handbrake?
According to these chassis numbers, my 627933 should not have it.

Do I have it?

or…
could it be a bracket on the rear of the front cable, on the cross of the chassis?
late Mark V parking brake

Shouldn’t it be pictured in the plate AZ?

I can’t check, it’s late and I’m in a pub.

Cheers!

Ps. / Edit: Sorry, I just saw it is not. Added later. :frowning:

Rob
Sorry I can’t help with an answer to your question.
However if you know the details of the SD1007 conversion I would be keen to see that.

Spare Parts Catalogue towards bottom of page 55:
C.3218 Bracket, Support for Handbrake Intermediate Lever
C.3278 Bracket, securing Handbrake Cable to Brace Members
These seem to be on the underside at the cross-brace?

I have not found an entry for the framework which holds the bracket to the scuttle as shown in Rob’s photo with the three “red” fasteners, nor have I found the lever near them. These parts all are in my car also, 628166.

Ok these are in the Chassis section, so perhaps they are welded to the chassis?
