[pre-xk] Mark V holes in firewall

A question for all Mark V owners concerning some unidentified holes in
my firewall (i.e. scuttle or forward bulkhead if you prefer). I am to
the point of lifting the body off the frame and getting it up on
sawhorses for some various repairs and welding closed of some extraneous
holes in the firewall. I have identified every original hole as to its
proper function, a few non-original holes which I will fill, and there
are two yet to be identified. Can I ask any interested Mark V owners to
take a look at their car and help me answer the question as to whether
these holes I will describe are original and if so what is their
purpose?

Hole A - 3/8 inch diameter, on the lower scuttle panel (below the
battery shelf) 10-1/2 inches from the right hand edge, 1-1/2 inch down
from the battery shelf, just above and to the right of the big grommet
for the solenoid wires.

Hole B - 1/2 inch diameter, on the vertical panel behind the battery, 1
inch down from the top curved portion of the scuttle, 1/2 inch to the
right of the centerline of the car, just visible over the top of the
battery.

Do any of you have either of these two holes and anything attached
there? This car was fully assembled when I bought it in 1969, and these
two holes were already there but not being used for anything.
All opinions welcomed as to whether they are original or not.

Rob,
On mine hole A also has a matching hole above and to the left of the
grommet hole for the solenoid. Both serve as attachments for the wiring
harness clamps on the inside of the car. My hole seems to be just 1/4" and
is 3 1/2" from battery shelf, so it may not be what you’re looking for.

For hole B, I could find no such hole at the locations you described.
Behind my battery are 2 rectangular blocks of some kind of insulation type
of material that is attached to the firewall somehow. Maybe they fit in a
big hole. I’ll have to look more from the inside underneath the dash at my
next opportunity.

While looking for your holes, I did notice a hole about 1 " down from the
battery shelf in the center (right behind the valve cover) that had a
protrusion of a pipe about 3/8" in diameter and protruding about 3/8" out
the firewall. I figure it must be connected to the heater somehow as the 4
big bolts that hold the heater fan inside underneath the dash surrounds the
pipe I described.

Hope some of this helps.

Thanks for your response, Craig. Your central hole with the pipe
sticking out is an air bleed or burp valve for the heater core. When
refilling the radiator after a draining, you open the air bleed valve
with a screwdriver and burp out the air, and a bit of coolant will come
out too. Mine is the same. The two rubber pads behind the battery are
just glued on, but there are a couple of bolts under them that hold the
brackets for the instrument panel.

I also identify the two wiring clip holes you mention on either side of
the big grommet, and to confirm I notice in the manual page P7 plate P3
shows two screw heads here. Using this photo where the words CHARGING
AND INSPECTION LAMP SOCKET are printed across the middle, my Hole A is
about at the letter P in INSPECTION. My Hole B is directly to the rear
of the third battery cell cap, not the one with the negative post but
the third one over.

So unless I hear from someone else to the contrary, I am going to take
it that these are extraneous, put there by some PO for mounting some
accessory that is long gone.

Steve B., great to hear you are making progress, helps to keep some of
the rest of us going.
