[pre-xk] Mk IV 1.5 litre saloon rear end rebuild

Here is info that may be helpful if you need to overhaul the 3HA
rear axle in a post war 1.5 litre saloon. These axles (at least
the center section) are essentially a Spicer (Dana) 23 same as used
in Willys military Jeeps and early CJ2A Jeeps. The ring and pinion
are the same 4.88 to 1 and interchange perfectly. I ordered ring
and pinion, pinion seal, adjusting shims, and gaskets from a
vintage Jeep parts vendor and all parts matched the Jaguar. While
my differential (spider) gears were okay, my differential carrier
was cracked and I also bought one for a Jeep. Due to differences
in the Jeep/Jaguar axle shafts, the Jaguar axle shafts won’t quite
insert into the ends of the Jeep differential carrier. It is
necessary to ream the ends of the Jeep carrier a few thousandths to
match the inside diameter of the Jaguar carrier to make this part
work. It is also an otherwise perfect match to the Jaguar part.
All bearings are Timken and readily available at local auto parts
stores.

I hope this helps someone who needs to go through their 3HA rear
axle. I discovered this after purchasing but never receiving parts
from a British company, Salisbury Transmissions. I won’t go into
details but if you are searching for rear axle parts and come
across this company, be very careful. Contact me and I’ll be happy
to provide details.–

In the same vein, the Salisbury 2HA used in Mark V is the Dana/Spicer 41,
used in Studebaker, Kaiser, Willys cars and Ford pickups into the early
'50s, although when I restored mine I noticed the bolts were British so I
suppose Dana had a factory in the UK.

Incidentally it is called Salisbury after the inventor C. W. Salisbury of
Jamestown NY. Charles Dana purchased the Salisbury Axle Company in 1919
after he had purchased a controlling interest in Clarence Spicer’s u-joint
company in 1914. The corporate website says they began operations in England
in 1925 but does not say where or what they made.
