[racing] Has anyone hard-mounted the front subframe?

I have a full set of poly control arm bushings for the front
of my XJ6 SIII. I started thinking about how I would
install them, and I realized that there’s some redundant
bushing in the front end. The front subframe is bushed with
four rubber mounts, however, everything that attaches to the
front subframe is also bushed with rubber mounts. The
shocks, upper and lower control arms, steering rack, sway
bar, and engine mounts all have some sort of rubber
insulating them from the subframe.

So… the question is, has anyone removed the front subframe
bushings? (Both the two round ones at the front and the two
saddle-style ones in the rear) What was the effect? Did
the car ride or handle differently? Was there more noise
and vibration transferred to the chassis?

BTW, this is for a road car, not a race car.–

I suggest you look in the archieves in the MKII section for old
posts by Jagpro. He has written much on the removal and
modification and the hard welding of the rubber mounts on the MKII
subframe. Not to much of a stretch to say they are similar. My
front end is on the bench with those mods in place. If it becomes a
problem in practice, in a few minutes I can return to to stock.
Good luck, Gordon. 86 Series III VDP V12, 61 3.8 MKII modified a
bit.–

Standard practice in racing. We care about feeling what the
car is doing not isolating ourselves from road feel. The
vibrations and shocks (not shock absorbers) that come with
solid mounts don’t matter when you’re on the ragged edge of
150 MPH in a turn…

Jaguar for the street is an elegant car. Don’t try to
re-engineer it unless you’re willing to make the required
trade offs.

Oh by the way we also rigidly mount the rear as well and
correct for the suspension geometry flaw that rubber mounts
allow. Far more accurate than rubber mounted…–

Thanks for the info. I will install the front poly A-arm
bushings and see how it feels from there. I am to trade
some of this floaty ride for something much more connected!–

Dave to what purpose?
I mean if you do spirited driving that will be a good
thing.Otherwise use the proper rubber ones…

However one thing you can do that will really improve your
feel is to install the viable pressure steering kit sold by
Rob Beere Racing…
Then you just dial up whatever pressure you want and turn it
back should a Lady want to drive it…

Here’s where a stiffer or adjustable set of shocks will help
as well. Stiff shocks only help so much. If you are
unwilling to lighten the car (it weighs over 4200 pounds now
and can be taken down to near 3200 pounds without all out
efforts…–

Oh I Have to respond to this one! Guess I’m not a lady! I have the delrin
frame & suspension bushings, bigger sway bars, Koni adjustable shocks,
stiffer springs, wider wheels, comp tires & a full roll cage. . And of
course, that un-ladylike power rack & pinion! Not adjustable either, Oh My!
Our race group’s rules don’t allow for much weight stripping so I’m still
throwing all that mass around the corners. Real crowd-pleaser & I’m used to
it. Wish I could attach a photo - it does look pretty silly leaning over in
a hillclimb. Just teasing you but, next time, think before you lump all
women into the bimbo class. Sue (& Gracie the 61 MK2 MOD)

Thank you for bringing up the gender issue Sue.

I’ve replied privately to you but owe others a response…
I’ve never been told calling someone a lady is derogatory.
I’ve place being a lady in the same category as being a
gentleman…For of a comment about conduct rather than
anything derogatory…

In fact the British honor women by referring to them as
Ladies. (The wife of a Lord is referred to as LadyXXXX)
Yes Ladies may discard their designer dresses and slide on
Jeans and a work shirt to following their interests. That
does not all Ladies are Bimbo’s anymore than all Gentlemen
men are ignorant, insensitive, dolts…–
