on the xj8 i notice the drain plug looks like a butterfly screw. Im assuming this has never been drained. what tools or precautions should i do not to break this plug.

Not a lot just be gentle as its non ferrous you shouldn’t have any problem with it being frozen.
Put grips around the outside carefully to get it moving first.
Then use the butterfly with your fingers
