[s-type] Black Touchscreen

To cut a long story short after going into my operating system as
described below in this TSB (I was trying to fix a Sat Nav problem)
I have now ended up with a black screen, no airconditioning or
anything related to the touchscreen is working.
When it first shutdown the car went into reduced power mode but
after leaving off for an hour it returned to normal driving mode.

Can anyone suggest a remedy for this or at least explain what I
have done.

My feeling is that I have done something which may well turn out to
be expensive to correct. I took the car to a Jaguar dealer to look
at briefly but after disconnecting and reconnecting the battery to
no avail they said I would have to book a time and bring the car
back for an investigation.

I see in this bulletin below under note 6 that ‘if the system
doesn’t recover the DVD unit will have to be replaced’ this sounds
expensive

Hopefully someone can confirm that I have indeed been foolish
enough to play around with something I shouldn’t have but there may
be a solution for my error other than an expensive one???

Should a customer express concern, update the telematics operating
system software following the
workshop procedure outlined below.
Note: Obtain and record the audio unit key code before carrying out
the Workshop
Procedure.
Workshop Procedure
Automatic Telematics Software Updating
Note: All customer-stored locations will be removed when the
software is updated (memory
points, avoid areas, recent destinations, home positions etc).
1 Check the software level.
Note: The software level can be checked by pressing and holding
the ‘Phone’ and ‘Menu’ keys
down at the same time for approximately 5 seconds - A ‘PIN Entry’
screen will be
displayed. Enter code 917 and press ‘ENTER’. The latest software
version can be
identified by checking the latest Telematics Software Release Note.
Only load this
software if an earlier level is identified.
2 Open the luggage compartment lid.
3 Turn the ignition key to the accessory position.
4 Remove the map DVD if currently installed.
5 Insert the latest level operating system software disc.
6 The system should automatically update from the inserted disc.
Note: If the ignition key is turned ‘OFF’ or the disc is ejected
while the software is updating,
the unit will lose all software and will display a blank screen. If
this happens, leave the
system for approximately 20 minutes with the ignition switched ‘ON’
and the operating
system software disc inserted, the system should then recover to
complete the update.
If the system does not recover the DVD unit will require
replacement.
7 When the update is complete the system will display the ‘Leaper’
screen and
then time out to display one of the sub-systems (Air Conditioning,
Radio, Navigation or
Phone).
Note: The radio PIN entry screen may be displayed first. At this
point enter the radio PIN and
the system will function normally.
8 Re-insert the map disc.

I’d check the disk is readable first - you could be lucky and have a dodgy CD.

lhdstr,

Just doing a bit of list-hopping when I saw this.

No experience of XK’s but did suffer an extremely similar problem
when messing around with my system.

Did you actually have the Dealer ‘‘latest level operating system
software disc’’ to undertake step 5?
These are as rare as dragons teeth so it suprises me if you are
fortunate enough to have obtained one?

I had messed about with the s/w firmware revision upgrade
activity, in the end I took it to a friendly dealer service
Manager, he followed step 6 EXACTLY and after a long 20 minutes the
screen burst back into life. It was drinks all round!!

Good luck.–

I am wondering if the ‘‘latest level operating system software
disc’’ is the same disc as a ‘sat nav update disc’? that are
available on ebay

lhdstr,
1-From the limited info on this advert I’d say something
different, the dealer ‘‘operating system software disc’’ is
a much more valuable item than just the ‘common’ Sat-Nav
update DVD’s often seen on EBay.

2- Hadn’t seen that EBay variant before, reading between
the blurb I’m very curious what it actually delivers.
Most ‘‘end-user’’ Sat-Nav update DVD’s are clear that they
upgrade you to a more current version of (say) UK/European
road maps.
This advertised DVD just says: ‘‘THE most annoying feature
about this system is the inability to enter destinations
whilst the car is in motion. Not even the passenger can
enter them! This update removes the restriction and allows
full control of the system whilst on the move’’.

However I’d be EXTREMELY surprised if after years of Jaguar
refusing to allow any such override mechanism on the system
(not even dealers had the stated capability to alter that!)
for there to be a VALID means of actually overriding the
embedded restriction. Jaguar have been frightened silly of
anyone using such an option and then they/dependents/3rd
parties suing for any subsequent crash caused by inattention
to their driving.

Perhaps worth getting a clear and honest(for a pirated
disc!) response from the seller?

Have you resolved your blank Touchscreen issue?–

If it allows you to use the system without introducing any problems I’ll
buy one!!!
It’s possible they are disabling the vehicle speed sensor in which case
it’ll be useless when satellite coverage isn’t available due to tall
buildings etc.

Wish that Jag would realize that at times there are TWO people in the car.

Every other car that I drive or use that has a GPS allows you to make changes while
driving after hitting the “make sure you are not driving” message.

Anyone with any updates on this, pls let us know!
