[s-type] Cost of 4.0 V8 engine?

Our S-Type 4.0’s timing belt is broken. If in the worst case
the engine needs to be replaced, how much should it cost
including labor?–

Shawn,

First question is, where are you located? Price will depend a lot on if you are in the UK or
elsewhere.

There are various suppliers of the V8 engine around the world. Usually one or two
overhauled versions can be found on Ebay if you are in the US, and there are various
companies doing this.

Also, if the timing belt has given away and the valves have kissed the pistons there is a
chance that you might only need to replace the heads. On the other hand everything may
be damaged so its worth taking a look into the engine. How many miles on the car when
this happened?

Let us know where you are and we can go from there.

Thanks Joe, I’m located in western Canada. The car only had
about 40,000 miles on it. We still need to ask the mechanic
what else he’s found out about the engine, but if it’s just
the heads how much should it cost? Due to the potential
costs we’re not sure if we should through with the repair or
do an engine swap if that’s feasible, or trade it in, that
is if someone would take it (the local Jag dealer wouldn’t).
The vehicle, if it was working, is only worth at most
$10,000 as a trade-in apparently, and who knows how much the
repair would cost!–

Actually, the Jag service rep said it’s a timing chain, not
timing belt.–
