[s-type] steering wheel adjustment knob clicking

Hi, On my sons year 2000 S-type 3.0 SE the electric steering
wheel adjustment knob works fine for up, down and away
adjustment of the steering wheel but the wheel will not move
back towards the driver. There is a clicking sound from the
knob when trying to adjust the wheel towards the driver but
no movement. Does anyone know if this is most likely to be a
faulty adjustment knob, faulty motor, faulty solenoid or
what. Any advice welcome. Thanks TJR–

According to the wiring diagram:
Movement is controlled by an Instrument Pack Module.
There are two motors, one for up/down and one for in/out.
There are two switches, one for up/down and one for in/out.
There are two column position feedback potentiometers, one
for up/down and one for in/out.

It sounds like your in/out motor moves the wheel IN but
won’t reverse. There are two likely causes.

  1. The in/out switch is making contact for IN but not for OUT.
  2. The in/out potentiometer is sensing wrong, it thinks the
wheel is already OUT and won’t allow it to go OUT any more.

Better get the JTIS CD-ROM and see how to get the thing
apart. Be careful as you don’t want to set off the air bag.–
