From time to time I come across piuctures of Mk1 & 2 equipped with a ‘rollable’ sunroof.
Lacking A/C this might be an option worth considering when planning a restoration.
I know there are companies specialized in such modifications, but down-to-earth with budget - has anyone tried adopting some current popular faltdach from a Mercedes or Renault successfully … or not ?

I believe you are thinking of the Webasto sunroof conversion that was done on some new Mark IIs straight out of the factory.
I have a full kit, purchased from a firm in the UK who were reproducing them. The kit is really well made, but my bodyman refused to install it.
Ouch ! Over 40 pages of installation manual ! No wonder he passed on this one.
I bet You’ve invested quite a money on a factory new kit for Mk2, doubt if I could ever afford it.
But some used parts from modern cars can be purchased at 100GBP level, so maybe theres some alternative. Like a SkyWindow by FIAT ?
However I suspect that Mk1 roof’s high curvature might become an obstackle …
