[Saloon-lovers] 420G Brakes

So what’s going on? You forgot to mention what the symptoms are!

Well it’s long time no post for me, but I’ve been struggling with
other cars for a while and haven’t been doing much on the Jags
lately. Having said that, I’ve almost got one of my 420G’s on the
road, but am having enormous trouble getting the brakes to work.
I’ve bled them a few times, but it doesn’t seem to make much
difference. My brother thinks maybe the master cylinder has become a
bit porous with age, but my friendly local Jag-person seems to think
this unlikely. Any ideas would be gratefully received.
Cheers

The 420G’s braking system is follows modern practices very closely, and a bad
master cylinder is certain possible.

What are the exact symptoms?

Hi All,

I guess this subject has been covered before but…
What are the recommendations regarding re-sleeving the brake master
cylinder? Brass or Stainless Steel?

Does anyone know of somewhere in the UK that does this type of work?
(and approximate cost)

Also, is it possible to strip the servo (booster) unit? My workshop
manual only covers the MK10 (different unit). I believe mine is OK, (it
was 6 years ago when last used!!) but I would like to check - remove any
oily crud, inspect the diaphragm (if there is one) etc.

Any info gratefully received
Thanks in advance
Dave

I’m pretty sure they are a sealed unit, and thus not easily disassembled for
inspection.

Does anyone in Australia known of a source of reasonably priced front
discs for '70 420G? And handbrake pads?

How easy is it to change the handbrake pads, how long does it take to
remove the carriers etc? Is this an all weekend wrestle or one late
night? I assume I will have to clean it all up, lubricate etc.

On replacing uni joints in left rear hub carrier, what sort of puller
would I need, or does it all just flop out when I remove the centre nut
holding the disc on? How long does this job take?
