I’m looking for the pipe that connects (via short hoses at
both ends) the crankcase breather on the front of the head
to the short tubing stub on the bottom centre of the air
intake plenum.
Might someone let me know if this ebay item is it?
It’s advertised as a coolant pipe. I asked the seller if
the outside diameter is 7/8 inch and/or if it might be a
breather pipe but he didn’t get back to me. Thanks!–

Bob,
I took parts off my 420G awhile back, and I don’t think the
breather tube had that Ebay’s tube shape. The Ebay tube looks like
an XKE’s tube. Since it’s not on auction, hold off buying till I
find mine, photo it, and send you that photo. If the ‘‘G’’ part had
that shape, it would have been saved on my ‘‘special and never to be
seen again - almost E-type pile’’.
On the XKE, that tube has a small hole in the middle, bottom to let
moisture out. Not good for a water pipe.

Thanks, Phil. I’d very much appreciate a photo of yours. I
still haven’t bought that one because it’s not cheap, plus
the seller obviously could care less, as he never responded
to my email.
I’m thinking of making my own. I bought a length of hose,
but it’s a bit stiff to thread through there.–

George,
The later 3.8 (after the 1961 flex hose) and the early ('65 only)
4.2 XKE’s I believe had clips to hold them to a lower manifold
stud. When the pipe diameter was enlarged, they didn’t have clips.
On to the MK10 pipe on Ebay - the pipe on my 420G parts car is a
water pipe under the carbs. My mistake. The Ebay pipe’s clip is
welded on and not attatched with a tiny pinch bolt like the E’s. It
also looks like the larger diameter used on XKE’s after '66. Best
to contact the seller to confirm the MK10 source.
George (again),
I’m thinking twice about the mount clip on the early E’s. I’ll have
to drag out the parts books.

Thanks Clive.
So if I’ve got it right, the Ebay pipe for sale is indeed
the breather pipe according to both you and George?
I got confused because a similar pipe (coolant) is also on
the Series 1 XJ.
Hopefully not over-imposing on your generosity, but would
you mind also telling me if the ‘‘taller’’ side of the handles
that attach to the rear seat picnic trays are inboard or
outboard? A trivial point, but I’m about to fit a pair of
those handles to XJ40 trays that are in my Series 1
XJ6–might as well have them the right way.
The beautiful photo in your link shows one handle but I
can’t tell which way it is oriented.–

I agree with George on this one, it’s the pipe fitted mine
back on about a month ago, I have May 1970 model…
