[Saloon-lovers] outer door window seal

G’day, all. I’m going thru the doors on my '62 Mk2 project.
Have new inner window seals ready to cut to length when I
mount them. I have rolled-up outer seals from SNG Barrat.
What’s the drill for replacing these? If the chrome strips
have to come off, are they particularly persnikety? Looking
for some advice before starting in. Thanks, David

If they are similar to S-type and MKX, there should be a
‘‘toe’’ at one end of the chrome strip which retains the seal.

Technically it is possible to very gently prise this toe,
and drag the old seal out, then feed the lubed new seal in.

however, I found this pratically impossible, and removed the
chrome strip entirely.

The screws that retain the chrome strip are fairly
accessible, but can be rusted in place, which is another
reason to remove the strip and replace small screws with
copper-slipped SS items.

make SURE you do not pre-cut the length too short.
Do the final trim once the seal is all in–

Dave,

IIRC it was only the later cars which had rubber seals fitted into
the chrome strip, the earlier seals were different.

Your car, being quite an early one, should have the same metal
backed weatherstrip as that which fits onto the inside of the
door glass. The weatherstrip is screwed / pop rivotted on to
the folded lip at the top of the door. The top door chromes
should not have a place where the later seals would slide in (
hope all this makes sense ! )

Easy to get the top of door chrome strips off, just carefully
slide a thin screw driver under the edge and pop them off

re: Window seals
Thanks for the replies. It would seem that SNG Barratt has
sent me the later model seals. As always, your help is much
appreciated. Best, David–
