[Saloon-lovers] Steering coupling too large - Mk IX

All -

The steering couplings sold by all the various suppliers are
too large (54 mm diameter hole to hole), vs 50 mm diameter hole
to hole for the couplings that are currently on the car.

Is there a way to fix this, or are we supposed to just squish
these things down? Doesn’t seem normal or safe.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Alan–

Nevermind all - I found out they are designed to be compressed
slightly when mounting… so I will clamp them before mounting.–

You are a life saver. With this very simple answer to the same question I had. I have been scouring the world for the correct size coupling. Compressing the coupling makes perfect sense. This is why the forum is so valuable.

I might also add that everyone should inspect this rubber coupling in their steering column as mine completely disintegrated, luckily at a stop light, but could be a life and death situation at highway speeds or in a turn.
Please check yours and replace the coupling when it looks warn.

I have changed them on 2 XK150s (they and the Mk9 are the only cars that have them). Some suppliers’ doughnuts dont have a derp enough recess/holes, and or the Allen screws sre not long enough. The thresds need to protrude, to ideally take a lock washer, but the rubber will probably crack before the nuts uneing. Gocen the procimity to the exhaust headers, I’d say that the life span us about 5 yrs😱

It’s been a while since we’ve seen Glenn_Smeed — their last post was 7y ago.

More information on Glenn’s MK 9 can be found on my post 5 days ago under “What did you do to your saloon today” Here’s a photo.
