[Saloon-lovers] Trip to Spain in the future

My daughter has been a Rotary Youth Exchange Student for the last year in
Spain and the Canary Islands. We will be going over to pick her up in
May/June It always amazes my wife when we suddenly come upon a car or
motorcycle museum or factory. Car and motorcycle events are also
appreciated by my long suffering wife. I don’t want her to be disappointed,
so does anyone know of anything going on in the Canary Islands, the South of
Spain or Valencia?? I always look like such a genius. Thanks John Shuck

John,

When I lived in Spain (mumble years ago) I found it fun to get in the car,
pick a random direction and just go and enjoy the country. At the time,
Franco was still in power (that dated me) and one had to take pains not to
get crossways with the Guardia Civil but really, it wasn’t a problem. The
Spanish are great people and they have a great country. If you’re a wine
lover, they are an emerging source of some really, really good wines. Go to
a bodega, eat some tapas and throw your watch away.

Probably the best thing to do is check with the hotel concierge for local
happenings.

Howsomever, this may sound as odd advice but if you will be in the South and
get the chance, don’t overlook Gibraltar.

In reply to a message from Dick Hile sent Sat 17 Mar 2007:

My souvenirs of southern Spain also date back to the days of
the GC and their funny plastic hats, so you might want to
check your Michelin Guide for an update, but there was a
really funky little private zoo about 50 km west of
Torremoulinos where you got to watch one of their parrots do
a high-wire act on a monocycle before getting yourself all
wrapped up in one of their 10-foot pythons.

Granada is also worth the trip, and not only for the
Alhambra. There’s a lot of fun to be had in the Gypsy
quarter’s Flamenco bars, but you’ll want to leave your
jewelry at home.
