[Saloon-lovers] XJ6 Gearbox Compatibility with 1962 Mk II

Dear Saloon Lovers,

I have an 1962 3.4L Mark II that requires an upgrade/replacment to it’s
original MOSS box + OD.

My mechanic and friend is keen for me to use one of his XJ6 full syncho
boxes with OD however this will require a different tail shaft and rear
mounting modifications. I am told however that the ratios are exactly
the same. I was keen to wait until I found an original MK II full sychro
box but I am told they are too rare and too expensive nowadays.

I’d appreciate comments from those who have had experience in this
regard before I commit myself.

Thanks in advance,

Steve

Hi,

I just wanted to add to my original email, firstly to introduce myself and
secondly to further qualify my situation. Sorry, I am not used to these
forums however I am keen to participate where and when I can.

My 1962 MK II started out as as 2.4L and just after I purchased it 4 years
ago in Auckland I realised I had to do something about the engine. Several
thousand dollars later I had a fully restored 3.4L engine, replacement diff
to suit the 3.4 engine and the original but restored Moss box back on the
road. The interior, suspension and brakes have been restored however the
exterior paint is in need of replacement. Since the drive chain was restored
3 years ago however, my Moss box and clutch has given me nothing but
trouble.

I was told that the first gear had to be made as it was actually broken
however since restoration I still get a very “notchy” gear change and
alarmingly loud “werring” noises when taking off in first gear. Yes, I have
had experience with non-synchro gearboxes as I owned a 1949 Rover P3 for
many years and that did not have any synchro’s on first or second gear. This
noise is quite exceptional and given the sever judder in first gear, this
has prompted investigation and replacement of the Moss box.

I know replacement of non original equipment is not desirable and I will
avoid it where possible but I have to be practical. Several people have told
me that I cannot purchase a full synchromesh + OD gearbox for Mark II’s and
my only chance would be to purchase a second car with one equipped!

This is why I have come to your forum to ask your advise. I am open to any
of your valuable suggestions.

Thanks in advance.
