Some mk7 enquiries

Open the toolboxes in the front door. (They may well come off in your hands), this will enable you to check the insides of the doors for bodge work. If the previous owner has removed the toolboxes or screwed them shut, expect the worst.
Remember the woodwork veneers were a matched set for that particular car, so any replacement bits won’t match. .
The sidelamp pods on the front wings were spot welded on and then leaded. Corrosion sets in between the two and the leaded area bulges up. These areas are often bodged up as well.
Am I putting you off?.. I hope so!
If not, I’ve got plenty of other horrors I can tell you about.
Have you driven one? Seriously heavy steering.

OH, GOD !!! , Can you tell me any good news !!!:sob: Problem is , the car is not in the same country as me .

I think your paint damage is more than paint damage. i think the filler has been applied to bodged repairs and the rust has continued to develop, finally dislodging the filler & cracking the paint. Although of course I can’t be certain I have seen this type of repair myself in the past and the picture is appropriate.

TAKE AN EXPERT WITH YOU. Save yourself £thousands!

Or put at least £15,000 aside for repairs as, if this is how it’s been repaired in the past, there will be plenty more to find.

To paraphrase: buy in haste, repent at leisure!

Thanks Bob , the consensus seems to be , run away , and live to fight another day !

Well, it would be a shame to miss it, but the consequences of buying a duff one are horrendous!

There aren’t many out there, but there are some and you might find a better one soon, or something similar - unless you’re a Mk VII nut, an 8 or a 9 might be just as much fun

Hi guys , what do you make of these pictures ? Headlining shows rust spots , the other shows a flake of paint removed , no rust behind .![IMG_2061|640x480](upload://lLokcdIayj6

Just as a matter of interest, where are you and what country is this car in.?

Hi Wardell I am in the UK , and the car is in Sweden . What do you think of the pics ?

Hi guys, my Mk7 coming to the UK soon

Well, I must admit it looks pretty good, but photos are often very flattering.
It’s an early Mk7, not the later mk7M. Small rear lamps, vent in front wings, crinkly bumpers…
7s, 8s and 9s come up for sale in UK. If you look in Jaguar Driver, or Jaguar Enthusiasts, magazine they come up for sale.
20,000 quid should buy something worth having. 10,000 would buy something that would need the same again spending on it, and would never be on the road.
These cars are not an investment, and a dodgy one is a money pit.
Mk9 is easier to drive as it has power steering and a bit more power.

Incidentally I live in York UK.

I had an extensive tour underneath via WhatsApp , it’s good , rust free . Never bought it for investment , just for fun . And not expensive . Is that a mk9 , does it fit in the garage

congratulations, there might be some rust or dents underneath the paint, but it may still be fine enough to drive for many years without needing to be repaired, or only tackle a small section at once

Oh behave!
It looks wonderful!!

Well done!
Very happy and excited for you…

The Swedish are good people too, so that helps.

Congratulations and looking forward to more images and info when it arrives!

Looks like the beginnings of a beautiful friendship.
Thanks for sharing and best wishes!

PS: Regarding body filler. Yeah, not uncommon.

Mine is rustfree too, yet has layers of filler like discovering ancient Rome beneath in an area or two.
The prior owner had a stroke I discovered, and scraping and denting the side a bit revealed it in same manner as yours.

People kept building it up instead of taking it down as they should have.

I recall to this day them saying on the E type I had, stripping it down, they went through 21 layers to get to bare metal.

Yours breaking away in the end most likely a result of constant temperature variation.
It gets really cold in Sweden dontcha know.

Thanks for your kind thoughts my friend , positive responses always help convince one that you’ve done the right thing . Regards Ken .

Thanks Tony , yes indeed . I’m not looking for concours , just a car to have fun with and enjoy .

I need a rear interior light glass , nearside , on a rhd car anyone have any ideas ? Also , I have to repair the bourdon tube in the temperature side of the duel guage . Is it difficult to get the guage and the other stuff out ?

I have taken a couple of gauges out, but I cant remember how long it took me

a while though…one thing I do recall…the thread into the coolant manifold where the sensor bulb goes was, or got stripped out…you really dont want that, nor to break the long thin tubes, so take your time

It is possible I have the piece you want…send me a pic…I have an idea that I sold one to someone else years ago…think they are sought after

ah yes…now I remember…I sold some items of “jewellery” to a guy restoring one…and he did not pay me!..came back a long time later and wanted some panels after someone crashed his car…lets just say we couldnt reach agreement on price

Hi

One must be a bit of a contortionist getting underneath, but you have the space to lay down there on the floor which is nice! Hah.

I can’t remember anymore I’m afraid.
Probably uses a knurled knob and bracket to hold in place.

As for the rear interior light lens, well, yeah…stuff like that will be the trick for you.
…yours is like sourcing such things for an old RollsRoyce.
I wouldn’t be surprised if that lens is the same on a Silver Cloud…

However you are very fortunate to be in the UK.
There are so many more parts available, suppliers, specialists, clubs and events.
One can even find them within breakers yards there.

Anyway, excuse me, I don’t know your experience, but remember, Jaguar cross-pollinated A LOT between all models.
No doubt the same used within XK120 and 140, perhaps even Mk1/2 saloons…I can’t remember what it looks like anymore.

Also other makes at the time share parts. Lucas stuff especially. Will save you $$$ when you learn the ins and outs and know what to search for online.
That all requires ownership experience I no longer have.

Lastly, FWIW, I don’t know how much of a purist you are…
I really am for the most part, however when it comes to some upgrades I make no qualms doing so.
Electronic ignition, electric cooling fans well hidden (you won’t need it), modern fuel pumps etc. not out of the question for me.

…but that’s me.

My point, that coolant temp bulb thing, I might upgrade it to the later temp sensor type on later cars if it were me.
Have the old original bulb thing restored and store it away?
They may be perfectly reliable though, I dunno…but very difficult to repair/replace.

( a quick search among the well known Jaguar suppliers yields nothing)

Also as a note, the 3.4L motor was used through '68 or something on 340 saloons. I believe the newer temp sensor type came in on the XK150.
Even within different displacements many parts are interchangeable.
Part numbers changed though over the years on things, so it will pay to keep that in mind and can save you $$$ in the future.

Especially with the internet, where searching for the correct part number from a different model can suddenly bring up Joe Smith In Manchester peddling one on ebay discovered in his father’s attic.

Things like this you will have to learn and develop a feel for over time.
Create a browser folder entitled “Jaguar” … it will become like a genealogy tree of links of articles, places, and people…

Personally, I buy up extra stuff like lenses and the like whenever I come across them, or see one being parted out, send a message and make an inquiry.
I’m always searching Jaguar stuff and models on ebay for Heaven’s sake.

Something to keep in mind.

FINAL note, begin collecting some old manuals on your car. Gotta love the internet.

Unlike new cars, these old manuals actually tell you how to repair and do everything!
Manual variations seem to have some information in one that is not in another…so it pays to get a few different ones.

I looked online and found some links I’ll forward directly via PM.

FWIW !!
All the best

Hi Tony , yes I was thinking it would be a bugger of a job , but I guess it will be off the road for several months waiting for its registration to come through , so I have time . The car is still in Sweden , but I will try and get the owner to send me a pic of the interior light. It would be great if you had one . You won’t have the same trouble you had last time . Regards Ken
