Starter has died

need to replace starter after 28 years…can’t remember which supplier I used…suggestions please…Garage said have to drop exhaust…I did this on a creeper 28 years ago. don’t remember dropping the exhaust. got it loose and wiggled it out, if memory serves me correctly. thoughts? Michael. 85 xjs

I have not done this. But have heard someone say they took it out from above. It is heavy.
You should have a12 point socket for the top bolt

takes 2 10" extensions/universal taped so it don’t flop and a 9/16 socket…easy pezy

That top bolt is a weird one. From memory, I used an 11mm 12-point socket without issue and it was very tight.

Assuming this is a V12, yes, you have to drop right side downpipe. Otherwise no room to get that mega starter in/out.

The 12 point is for the upper bolt on transmission side. Extensions, u joint, good light, and patience is needed. A six point socket can strip it. (It’s a star like bolt head)
