Steering shaft issue?

Hi all,
reassembling the steering rack on my 1973 S1 I noticed that the lower steering shaft does not turn perfectly in a circular pattern, rather more on an “ellipsoidal” one, as you can see in the brief video attached. Is it ok or there is something wrong?

Also there is a bigger welded tube on the lower part of the shaft: is it as Jaguar intended or has been modified by some past owner?

I am not familiar with the S1 configuration, but it sure looks like your steering shaft is bent…
Also it seems that your U-Joint has some play as well.
Did you check the upper column ? Maybe excessive play, or unseated bearings ?
The welded part also looks like it took a hit.
And there should be a rubber boot to close the big gaping hole at the firewall.

The rubber boot is detached to better see the shaft in the video.

The car has not been damaged by accident, I stripped it down almost entirely and there aren’t signs of body damage whatsoever (rust apart).

My fear is that someone cut the steering shaft (for some reason, like, weirdly putting a new rubber boot) and welded that bigger tube not perfectly straight.

The U-joints seem almost steady, but if I’m going to find a new shaft they’ll go with it
