Swaping auto transmission from aXJ40 to S3 XJ6

Hello people, I´m a member of this forum, but in the XJS section.
I´m writing on behalf of a friend.
He is the owner, here in Spain, of a S3 XJ6 with a BW auto transmission that is not working. In my country there are not so many specialists in that type of gearbox.
The thing is that he´s got a a Daimler 1990 XJ40 with the ZF4HP22 transmission.
The XJ40 is for scrapyard but the transmission is ok.
The question :
is there any posibility of adapting the XJ40 trans in the S3 XJ6 ?
Is it a difficult task to mate the box with the old XK block ?
What kind of modifications are involved ?

Hope you can help me
Thanks in advance

Hi Carli,
If he doesn’t really need the 4th gear he should stick to repairing or replacing the existing one… it might not be that much wrong with it? Lot of effort…

Thanks David, that could be the last solution.
I only wanted to know if anybody has done this before.

Yes, it’s been done before. If the transmission isn’t electronic, you need to make adaptor plates and linkages etc. so it’s going to cost some money, too. And it‘ll probably take longer than expected. But yes it can be done!

Bad English. The transmission must not be electronic. Adapter plate etc. is always required.

As has been said an adapter plate is going to be required as the AJ6 engine sits at about a 15 deg angle.

Thanks again , David

You‘re welcome, also with help diagnosing the current transmission.

Thanks Robin. Now I realize that certainly the AJ6 engine sits slanted, being the main diference with the old engine.
That makes impossible any straigh bolt between box and block.

Beyond that the 4.0 XJ40 trans is electronic and probably needs input from the engine management. 3.6 XJ40 trans has a cable for modulation and no electronics.

Swap the engine too, with electronics! Would probably be simpler and drive better.
