Temp sensor for ECU

Is it advisable to use a sealant (like Stag) on the xj6 s3 1982 4.2 ECU Temp sensor, or does the body of the sensor need to make a good electrical connect with the gnd of the motor and therefore better left bare ?

It’ll have a sealing washer; I don’t use any sealant and never had one leak.

The sealant/no sealant question remains pertinent for other sensors without a washer, however. I’m in the ‘no sealant’ camp but opinions vary.

Isn’t it also very important to know whether threaded base provides ground… Unless there are conductive sealants?

The CTS does indeed require a good body ground, Zenit - but as Doug says; the washer provides the sealing, the threads provides the ground. Ie sealant is both unnecessary and counterproductive…

Thanks Frank, just checked the sensor on the engine and yes the thread has no sealant and a very good earthing thru thread. But resistance between pins is all over the shop, varying depending on where the probes contact the pins and the pressure applied. Obviously, there is a bad connection internally. Swapping it out in a couple of days.

Thanks Doug for the article on the CTS resistance values, very useful.

A swap should then indeed cure the problem, Zenit…
