The Jaguar Engine Publication 1953 by Bill Heynes

When you read the V12 paper you will see the reasons for bypass oil cooling (via coolant heat exchanger on E-types). The common wisdom on here is that Jaguar were stupid not to use full-flow cooling.

Lots of other stuff too. Two great papers - XK & V12

Thanks Pete,
I’ll read it again with that in mind.

I have read a lot on engine development by jaguar and Coventry Climax (Walter Hassan’s Climax in Coventry is a very interesting read). I find it hard to believe any “simple mistakes” like that were made. From what I gather a lot of thought went into the development.

Cheers,
Harald

Agreed: bypass oil cooling seems reasonable to me.

The key point is that any mechanical system supplying enough oil to sustain a V12 at hot idle, will be pumping gallons through a bypass at normal speeds or higher. So the difference between bypass and full flow is moot and Jaguar measured better warm up of engine and fluids by using their setup. Decades later they modified some stuff but the simplistic “Jaguar were stupid to….[insert fallacy of choice].” invariably come from people not aware of the goals of the design mission and most of the data assessed.
